Pussers Rum Lord Nelson Ships Decanter containing 1 litre of Pusser’s Rum bottled 47.75% ABV. A ceramic decanter with a ceramic / cork stopper.
Pusser’s Rum is produced on Tortola in the British Virgin Islands and is named after the Royal Naval Slang for a purser, a ship’s supply officer. For more than 300 years, sailors of the Royal Navy were issued a daily rum ration or “tot”, a highly welcome daily comfort when one was away from home for many months. The Rum Ration was abolished on the 31st July 1970 (“The Black Day”)
Pusser’s Rum quietly lay dormant until 1979 when Charles Tobias, entrepreneur, sought to resurrect the Pusser’s Rum tradition. Tobias managed to obtain the rights and the blending information from the Admiralty, set up Pusser’s Rum Ltd on Tortola and, in 1980, began selling Pusser’s Rum to the public for the first time (previously it was Royal Navy only). British Navy Pusser’s Rum is the same Admiralty blend of five West Indian rums as issued on board British warships, and it is with the Admiralty’s blessing and approval that Pusser’s is now available to the consumer. In return, The Royal Navy Sailor’s Fund, a naval charity more commonly called the “Tot Fund”, receives a donation from the sale of each bottle of British Navy Pusser’s Rum.
The Pusser’s Rum Lord Nelson Ships Decanter embodies the classic wide-bottomed design favored by Royal Navy sailing ships. Originating in the late 18th century, these decanters were a staple in captains’ cabins across vessels of all sizes, prized for their stability on turbulent seas. The broad base, a hallmark of the style, was perfected by Admiral Rodney, who showcased such a decanter during victory celebrations aboard his flagship after the Moonlight Battle (1780) and the Battle of the Saints (1782). With bases sometimes reaching 12 inches in diameter, these decanters ensured that fine spirits like Pusser’s Rum remained secure in wardrooms and officers’ quarters, no matter the ship’s pitch or roll.
Legend holds that a true ship’s decanter passes the “Rodney test”: the distance from the outer edge of the pouring lip to the base’s edge must equal or exceed the lip’s outer circumference, guaranteeing balance at sea. The Pusser’s Lord Nelson Decanter honours this tradition with elegant engravings, including the Royal Naval Toasts and Nelson’s famous flag signal from the Battle of Trafalgar, “England expects that every man will do his duty.” Adorned with additional naval inscriptions, this decanter is both a functional vessel for Pusser’s Navy Rum and a tribute to the Royal Navy’s storied heritage, perfect for collectors and rum enthusiasts alike.
