Mossburn Single Cask Blair Athol 2007 Madeira Cask is a single vintage, single cask, third party bottling of Highland Single Malt Whisky. It is part of Mossburn’s Single Cask range, a collection of Single Malt Scotch Whiskies each issuing from a strictly limited and select batch of casks.
Mossburn Distillers & Blenders is a brand new Scotch whisky project owned by Marussia Beverage which is part of the empire controlled by Swedish billionaire Frederik Paulsen. The company is headquartered at Jedburgh in the Scottish Borders on the site of the former Jedforest Hotel. Their new distillery, called Reivers Distillery, will be one of the first new distilleries to be built in the Borders for over 150 years. Mossburn have also established Torabhaig Distillery on the Isle of Skye, which opened in 2017 (the second distillery on Skye after Highland Park). The parent company also own the Kaikyo Distillery in Japan which produces Hatozaki whiskies. Not content with this, they have also created the peaty Caisteal Chamuis whisky range. The first Mossburn bottlings were released in 2017. Building a whisky distillery and waiting for whisky to come online (the spirit has to be aged for at least 3 years before it can even be called whisky) is a long term project. So, in the meantime, Mossburn have started the ball rolling by bottling a small collection of ever-changing single malt whiskies and two permanent blended malts, an Island and Speyside, with bespoke cask bills. There are also some very limited occasional single cask bottlings.
The Blair Athol distillery is located on the south edge of Pitlochry in Perthshire, near the River Tummel. It was established in 1798 by John Steward and Robert Robertson. The spirit distilled here is used in Bell’s blended whisky. Today the distillery is owned by Diageo.
Mossburn Single Cask Blair Athol 2007 Madeira Cask was distilled in May 2007 and bottled as a 14 year old in October 2021.
It is finished in an ex Madeira hogshead and bottled, non chill filtered, natural colour at 57.2% ABV.
Only 290 bottles produced.
Mossburn Single Cask Blair Athol 2007 Madeira Cask has buttery malty aroma with fruit cake, dried apricots and
honey. The secondary ageing gives a light sherry like tang
and a touch of old cedar to the nose. Malty sultanas,
caramelised nuts and a burnt butter character come through
on the palate before a weighty finish with oak spice, crème
brulee and a spirity kick to top it off.
Finish – Sweetness with some roasted hazelnut notes.
