Quinta do Vesúvio 2024 is the Symington Family’s flagship Single Quinta. Considered to be one of the most magnificent estates in the entire Douro Valley, Quinta do Vesúvio is one of the last properties in the region to produce its Ports exclusively using the traditional method of foot treading in granite lagares. The estate is known as the ‘Queen of the Douro’. The 2024 vintage is a wine of incredible complexity with a perfect balance of finesse and power, with Touriga Franca performing particularly well in this year. It is the largest Touriga Franca in a Vesúvio Vintage Port in recent years.
This is an “En Primeur” offer or pre-order from Fareham Wine Cellar. The 2024 Vintage Ports will be shipped in Autumn 2026.
The grapes at Vesúvio are trodden in the property’s old granite lageres by up to 50 treaders. It is this ancient process which results in wines of exceptional complexity with great ageing potential.
The 2024 is a blend of Touriga Franca: 47%, Touriga Nacional: 30%, Alicante Bouschet: 13%, and Sousão: 10% aged for 18 months in oak.
In 2024, head winemaker Charles Symington has used grapes from across five of the property’s micro-terroirs. The wine includes Touriga Nacional from the estate’s highest point at Quinta Nova, 50-year-old plantings of Touriga Franca at Vale de Trja, mature Alicante Bouschet from Vinha dos Castelos, more Touriga Franca from the lower-lying Vinha dos Castelos and another parcel for Touriga Nacional from Vinha das Abelhas. This selection of grapes has allowed a great deal of choice to produce the best possible Port.
Provenance: Quinta Nova, Vinha de Estacao, Vale da Teja, Vinha dos Castelos and Vinha das Abelhas
Grape Varieties: Touriga Franca: 47%, Touriga Nacional: 30%, Alicante Bouschet: 13%, and Sousão: 10%
The Symington family have declared 2024 as a classic Vintage Port year, their first in seven years, and one that wine lovers have been quietly hoping for.
After a run of harvests defined by heat and unpredictability, the Douro returned in 2024 to something closer to its traditional self. Gradual ripening, cool nights and a well-timed harvest gave fourth-generation Head Winemaker Charles Symington and his team the raw material they needed to produce wines of real elegance and restraint, the kind that reward patience in the cellar as much as excitement at the table.
Seven Vintage Ports have been bottled from this exceptional year. The core declarations – Warre’s, Dow’s, Graham’s and Cockburn’s – are joined by the magnificent Quinta do Vesúvio, one of the Douro’s most celebrated single-quinta estates. Two rare micro-terroir expressions complete the collection: Graham’s The Stone Terraces and the ultra-limited Capela da Quinta do Vesúvio, both produced in tiny quantities from some of the Valley’s most remarkable vineyard sites. In addition to the family’s principal Vintage Ports, they have also released a small quantity of Smith Woodhouse and Quinta de Roriz 2024 Vintage Port.
Charles Symington, Head Winemaker and Joint Managing Director, commented, “The 2024 Vintage Ports whisper rather than shout. After years of heat-driven power, these wines are characterised by their precision: taut structures wrapped in pure, crystalline fruit. This is Douro elegance with backbone, and refinement with staying power. It was worth the wait.”
Appearance: Deep, opaque ruby-purple with a vivid, youthful rim.
Nose: Aromas of lavender and rockrose lead, followed by ripe black cherry, damson and plum. Hints of dark olive, wild herbs and schist dust add earthy complexity, while a thread of praline and dried fruit deepens with time in the glass.
Palate: Prodigious and full-bodied, yet with the freshness and precision that defines the 2024 vintage. Rich red and black fruit fills the mid-palate – cherry, blackberry and dark plum – underpinned by firm, grainy tannins that carry the wine’s considerable weight with grace. A streak of vibrant acidity amplifies intensity and keeps everything focused, leading to a long, mineral finish with lingering floral notes and a touch of dark chocolate.
