About Taylor’s Sentinels

Taylor’s Sentinels 2024 Vintage Port is an exceptional limited-release Vintage Port that showcases the character of the historic Pinhão Valley. Produced from a blend of wines sourced from four of Taylor’s most prestigious estates – Quinta de Terra Feita, Quinta do Junco, Quinta de Casa Nova and Quinta da Eira Velha – this remarkable Port captures the elegance, freshness and longevity that have made Taylor’s one of the world’s most respected Port houses.

Released only for the third time, Taylor’s Sentinels Vintage Port takes its name from the ancient granite marcos de feitoria or sentinel stones that marked the original 1756 Douro demarcation, identifying the region’s finest vineyards. Crafted using traditional foot treading in granite lagares and aged in large oak vats before bottling, this is a Vintage Port designed to reward both immediate enjoyment and long-term cellaring. 2,600 9-litre cases were produced.

“I am delighted to announce our decision to release the Taylor’s Sentinels 2024 Vintage release. This is only the third time this wine has been bottled, underscoring once again our commitment to producing exceptional Ports that credit the legacy of our historic estates in the Pinhão Valley.” – Adrian Bridge, Managing Director.

Taylor’s Sentinels 2024 Vintage Port Winemaking and Vineyards

Taylor’s Sentinels 2024 is produced from fruit grown on four historic Douro estates located within the original Pombaline demarcation.

Each vineyard contributes its own personality through differing altitudes, exposures and traditional mixed plantings of classic Port grape varieties, including Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca, Tinto Cão and other indigenous Portuguese grapes.

The grapes are traditionally foot-trodden in granite lagares before maturation in large wooden vats, preserving the purity of fruit and structure that define great Vintage Port.

The 2024 growing season benefited from healthy winter rainfall followed by a long dry summer and cooler harvest conditions, producing wines with superb freshness, concentration and balance.

Taylor’s Sentinels 2024 Vintage Port Components

Sentinels is made from grapes sourced from four of Taylor’s properties:

  • Quinta de Terra Feita – As one of the Douro’s oldest estates, Quinta de Terra Feita has supplied Taylor’s since the 1890s, yielding powerful, full-bodied wines packed with rich berry flavours that inject crucial depth and volume into the classic Vintage Port blend.
  • Quinta do Junco – Added to Taylor’s estate in 1997, the famous, historic Quinta do Junco estate in the Pinhão Valley features sun-drenched, well-aerated hillside vineyards that yield massive, dense wines, contributing a vital layer of structure to the Taylor’s Vintage Port blend.
  • Quinta da Casa Nova – Acquired by the company in 1998, this historic 17-hectare estate in Gouvães do Douro dates back to the original 1756 Douro demarcation. Its north-facing, mid-slope location provides heat protection and is ideal for growing Port grape varieties.
  • Quinta da Eira Velha – Acquired by the company in 2007, this historic 50-hectare estate in the Douro Valley with over 600 years of wine-growing history is spectacularly situated on a southeast-facing slope overlooking the confluence of the Douro and Pinhão rivers.

History of Taylor’s Port

Founded in 1692, Taylor Fladgate & Yeatman is one of the oldest and most prestigious Port houses. As well as Taylor’s Port, the company also owns the Fonseca, Croft and Krohn Port Houses. They are one of the largest producers of Port, and Taylor’s Port is regarded as the benchmark for Vintage Port. Their Ports are well-known for their elegance, restrained power, longevity and distinctive scented character.

The 2024 Port Vintage

The 2024 Port Vintage marks the region’s first widespread, classic general declaration since 2017, celebrated as a spectacular return to a traditional, elegant style. Unlike recent heatwave-heavy years, a balanced growing season with unusually cool September nights slowed grape ripening to a crawl. This allowed the fruit to preserve phenomenal natural acidity, striking aromatic purity and a firm, finely chiselled tannic structure, drawing early stylistic comparisons to legendary vintages like 1970 and 1994.

Virtually every major Port house, including Symington, Fladgate and Niepoort, has declared the vintage, though quantities are exceptionally limited due to historically low yields. These wines trade sheer muscle for linear precision, vibrant tension and crystalline fruit definition. Built for extraordinary longevity, the 2024s possess the structural balance required to evolve gracefully in the cellar for the next 40 to 50 years, making them essential additions for serious collectors.

Taylor’s Sentinels 2024 Vintage Port is a rare opportunity to own a remarkable expression of the Douro Valley. Buy online or in store from Fareham Wine Cellar and discover one of the most exciting limited-release Vintage Ports from one of Portugal’s most iconic Port houses.
