Maggio Family Vineyards Zinfandel is an old vine American Zinfandel wine produced by the Oak Ridge Winery. It is made from Maggio family-owned vineyards located throughout the Lodi wine growing region. Available to buy now at Fareham Wine Cellar.
This wine is made by the Oak Ridge Winery, which is owned by the Maggio Family. The business was established by Italian immigrant Angelo Maggio when he planted the first vine cuttings in 1928. The winery itself was built in 1934 and was once the hub of a wine-making cooperative. Angelo’s grandson, Rudy, took over the winery from his father in 2002 and began transforming the winery into a modern, state-of-the-art winery.
Today, Rudy’s three daughters, who are all also wine-growers, oversee operations. Between the four family members, they own 2500 acres of vineyards throughout the Lodi American Viticultural Area (AVA). Surprisingly, it was not until 2022 that the family actually used their own family surname, Maggio, on their labels, but they have released wines under various names, including OZV, Old Soul, Blazon and 3 Girls.
The vineyard plots for this wine are found throughout the Lodi American Viticultural Area, situated between the Sierra Nevada foothills and the San Francisco Bay. The region’s Mediterranean climate with warm days and coastal evening breezes is ideal for the cultivation of world-class wine grapes. The old Zinfandel vines, some of which
are over 100 years old, are gnarled and sculpted by time, yielding small amounts of
intensely flavoured fruit to create wines characteristic of the Lodi terroir.
The Maggio Family has been based in Lodi for over 100 years and, as multi-generational farmers, has a deep sense of stewardship and a commitment to leaving the land better for future generations. All 2,500 acres of their vineyards are farmed in accordance with Lodi Rules, America’s original sustainable winegrowing program and a third-party certified initiative created specifically for the Lodi Appellation. This certification signifies adherence to over 100 rigorous, scientifically sound sustainability practices, and every Maggio wine label bears the “Lodi Rules for Sustainable Winegrowing, Certified Green” seal.
Oak Ridge Winery is also an associate member of the Women of the Vine & Spirits, dedicated to empowering and advancing women in the beverage alcohol industry.
Maggio Family Wines Zinfandel is deep and rich, showing ripe black fruit flavours with subtle jam and chocolate overtones, typical of these family-grown vineyards. Gentle on the palate with a subtle, smoky finish.
Try with BBQ, grilled meats, aged cheeses and hearty pasta dishes.
