E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Reynarde 2022 is the very first vintage of this cuvée. La Reynarde is the fourth “La La” joining Guigal’s three other iconic Côte-Rôtie wines: La Landonne, La Mouline and La Turque. In style it sits somewhere between La Turque and La Landonne with an exotic, perfumed elegance, lifted florals, crystalline focus, and an impressive persistence on the palate.
The 1.6 hectare La Reynarde vineyard was created to celebrate the birth of Philippe Guigal’s twin sons (as La Landonne was once planted to celebrate the birth of Philippe). Guigal began building and clearing the site in 2010, a process that took five years. The first vines were planted in 2015.
The vineyard is located only 160 metres or so from La Turque, in the Fongeant lieu-dit, which sits just above the Côte Brune in the Côte-Rôtie appellation of the Northern Rhône valley. This highly regarded lieu-dit is renowned for its steep slopes and mica schist, weathered to produce clay soils rich in iron oxides. The 100% Syrah vines have an average age of 10 years. It is known for producing exceptional, perfumed, and silky wines.
The vineyard is named after the nearby Reynarde stream, which runs between lieux-dits Côte Brune and Côte Blonde.
The La La wines generally need at least 12–15 years of cellaring, and at their best can evolve for 25 to 45 years depending on the wine and vintage.
Guigal Wines was founded in 1946 by Etienne Guigal in the village of Ampuis. His son, Marcel, took over from his father in 1961. Today, Philippe Guigal serves as Director and Oenologist, working alongside his father Marcel to uphold the family’s legacy of Rhône Valley leadership and uncompromising commitment to quality.
They are widely regarded as the benchmark producer of the Northern Rhône, producing wines across a range of appellations from their historic 12th-century Château d’Ampuis base in the village of Ampuis. The estate is perhaps best known for its iconic single-vineyard Côte-Rôtie “La La” wines: La Mouline, La Landonne, La Turque, and now La Reynarde, which are among the most collectable and critically acclaimed wines in the world. They also own illustrious plots in many famous appellations, including Condrieu, St Joseph and Ermitage
In 2003, in order to improve quality and control over all aspects of winemaking, Guigal opened an on-site cooperage. The cooperage at the Château d’Ampuis works in partnership with the cooperage at Chagny managed by Seguin Moreau.
Appearance: Deep ruby red with intense dark purple highlights, almost opaque in the glass, showing impressive concentration.
Nose: Bold and expressive, dominated by rich liquorice and black liquorice notes, beautifully interwoven with ripe dark fruits — think blackberry, plum, and blueberry compote. A touch of violet and sweet spice adds complexity.
Palate: Powerful and full-bodied, with a dense, structured core. The tannins are firm and tight, providing excellent grip, while the acidity remains refreshingly low, giving the wine a smooth, rounded feel. Layers of sun-ripened fruit and liquorice coat the palate, leading to a long, authoritative finish.
Overall: This is a concentrated, sun-drenched Northern Rhône Syrah that showcases the warmth of its terroir. Rich, opulent, and built to last, La Reynarde 2022 is a serious wine with excellent ageing potential
La Reynarde will pair perfectly with game, red meats and mature cheeses:
Herb-Crusted Roast Lamb – a classic match with rosemary and garlic.
Grilled Ribeye Steak – perfect with black pepper and charred meat.
Slow-Braised Short Ribs – rich, savoury beef dishes.
Venison or Wild Boar – great with game meats.
Aged Hard Cheeses – try with Comté, aged Gouda or strong Cheddar.
