Description

E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Turque 1998

E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Turque 1998 is a remarkable mature vintage of one of the Northern Rhône’s most celebrated single-vineyard wines. Renowned for its concentration, power and extraordinary depth, La Turque is one of three legendary Côte-Rôtie wines produced by the Guigal family, alongside La Mouline and La Landonne. Collectively, these three prestigious wines are affectionately known as the ‘La Las’.

The 1998 vintage is particularly impressive, with Robert Parker awarding it 98 points. Combining intense black fruit, smoky complexity, liquorice and savoury notes of roasted meat, it is a powerful and structured expression of the Côte-Rôtie appellation.

La Turque, A Legendary Vineyard

La Turque comes from a small, highly prized single vineyard parcel within the Côte Brune sector of Côte-Rôtie. The vineyard’s complex soils comprise granite, silica, limestone, schist and iron-rich clay, providing the foundations for the wine’s distinctive depth, structure and mineral character.

The Guigal family acquired the vineyard in 1980, releasing the first vintage of La Turque in 1985. Initial production was extremely limited, with just 200 cases produced. Even today, production remains tiny at approximately 400 cases per vintage, making La Turque one of the Rhône Valley’s most sought-after collectable wines.

Winemaking

La Turque is typically made from approximately 93% Syrah and 7% Viognier. The Syrah provides concentration, structure and dark fruit character, while the addition of Viognier contributes aromatic complexity and finesse.

The wine undergoes an extended maturation in new French oak barrels, allowing its powerful fruit, firm tannins and complex flavours to develop considerable depth. La Turque is often regarded as occupying a middle ground between the muscular structure of La Landonne and the aromatic elegance of La Mouline.

E. Guigal, Founded in 1946

Founded in 1946 by Étienne Guigal in the village of Ampuis, E. Guigal has become one of the most respected names in the Rhône Valley. His son Marcel took over the domaine in 1961, expanding its vineyard holdings and establishing an international reputation for exceptional Rhône wines.

The Guigal family owns prestigious vineyard parcels across the Northern Rhône, including Côte-Rôtie and Condrieu. Its most celebrated wines are produced and aged at the historic Château d’Ampuis, a 12th-century château overlooking the Rhône.

Guigal is particularly renowned for its meticulous approach to winemaking, extended maturation in French oak barrels and commitment to expressing the distinctive character of individual vineyard sites.

Food Pairing

E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Turque 2000 is an excellent match for richly flavoured game, roast venison, rack of lamb and fillet of beef. Its depth and savoury complexity also complement slow-braised beef, wild mushrooms and dishes featuring truffle. For a particularly special pairing, serve alongside roast pigeon or venison with a red wine jus.
