Torres Mas la Plana is Torres’ flagship, and probably their most famous, red wine. Unusually for a Spanish red wine it is made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon.
Familia Torres Wines has been making wine in the ancient Catalán town of Vilafranca del Penedès, southwest of Barcelona, since the 17th Century. It is this tradition combined with innovation, dynamism and commitment to quality that has put Torres firmly on the world map. They remain one of the largest family-owned and run wine companies in the world (there is also Miguel Torres Chile and Marimar Torres in California) and, under the stewardship of fourth-generation Miguel Torres they are committed to sustainable viticulture and green practices. Today Torres not only have vineyards in their home region of Penedes, but all over Spain in regions such as Priorat, Rioja and Rueda. In 2006 Torres was awarded European Winery of the Year in Wine Enthusiast’s Annual Wine Star Awards. The Torres family is also one of the founding members of Primum Familiae Vini.
It is now 40 years since this mysterious Spanish wine was first released. It is now sometimes known as “The Black Legend” with its black label and dark Burgundy-style bottle. Few had much faith in this project. Certainly, nobody back in 1979, could have dreamed that it would triumph in a Parisian blind tasting against some of the world’s most famous wines. In 1979, at the Gault-Millau Wine Olympiad, the 1970 vintage triumphed over some of the most famous wines in the world, including Chateau Latour and Chateau Haut Brion. This success has been repeated on many other occasions, with Mas La Plana notching up numerous other international awards. The wine and vinification has changed over the years. During the 1970s, Torres Mas La Plana was aged in American oak for 6 months before 12 or 18 months in old oak barrels. In 1990 the decision was made to age the wines in 100% French oak.
The Cabernet Sauvignon grapes for Torres Mas La Plana come from a 29 hectare vineyard which was planted between 1964 and 1979. Located in the heart of Penedès in the subzone of Turons de Vilafranca and flanked by the Foix River and its tributary the Riera de Llitrà, the 29-hectare vineyard is distributed across ten plots on two levels. The soils here are deep, retain water well and are primarily of gravel (limestone, dolostone) and alluvial limestone from the Miocene age. Only the very best parcels of grapes are selected to make strictly limited quantities of this prestigious red wine. After harvest the grapes undergo a period of maceration for 28 days followed by a 7 day fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel (at 28 to 30c). The wine is aged for 18 months in new French oak barrels (60% new).
Suitable for vegans and vegetarians.
Torres Mas la Plana Cabernet Sauvignon presents concentrated aromas of blackcurrant and blackberry, frequently complemented by cedar, tobacco, and vanilla notes from oak aging. The palate is full-bodied with firm, well-integrated tannins, creating a velvety texture. Prominent dark fruit flavors are often present, sometimes accompanied by hints of spice or dark chocolate. This structured wine is well-suited for aging, developing greater nuance and complexity over time.
