Chateau Leoville Poyferre is located in the St Julien appellation of Bordeaux and was classified as a 2nd growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification. Chateau Leoville Poyferre was once part of the greater Leoville Estate, the largest vineyard in the Médoc region at the time of the French Revolution, which was split into Chateau Leoville Las cases and Chateau Leoville Barton. Chateau Leoville Poyferre was created in 1840 when Las Cases was divided again. The vineyards of Leoville Poyferre sit on gravelly, well-drained soils and cover 200 acres. The grapes are hand-harvested into small wooden crates and are first hand sorted prior to a second optical sorting before crushing. Each plot of vines is vinified separately in the traditional manner. The blend for Chateau Leoville Poyferre is usually around 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot. The wines are aged in French oak barrels for 18-20 months, 75% new barrels, 25% one year old. Michel Rolland provides advice for vinification and blending.
