Las Medallas Manzanilla Sherry is made by Bodegas Argueso in the port town of Sanlucar de Barrameda. It is a Fino Sherry, however, Fino Sherry from Sanlucar de Barrameda is known as Manzanilla Sherry. Bodegas Argueso can trace its origins back to a grocery store founded by Mr. Leon de Argüeso y Argüeso in 1822. Eventually Argueso began buying and storing old barrels at the San Jose cellar. At his death in 1878 his nephews took over the running of the business which was greatyl expanded original core of the Bodega San Jose in Sanlucar de Barrameda. Gradually, a series of new buildings were added to complete the winery. Today Argueso Sherry has 26,000 square meters of covered cellar areas and now has 25 employees – it recognised by many as the best producer of Sherry in Sanlucar de Barrameda. Mazanilla is often described as having a salty tang due to the barrels ageing warehouses close to the Guadalquivir estuary. The cooler temperatures and high humidity here also means that there is a thicker cap of Flor (the layer of yeast over the top of the Sherry) which means the wine is fresher and more delicate than other Finos. This is the main Manzanilla Sherry made by Argueso and is aged following the same method as for Fino Sherry production. This is a young Manzanilla and is not aged in the Solera for as long as Argueso’s San Leon Manzanilla. Consequentially Las Medallas Mazanilla is a lighter, more delicate style.
