Niepoort 2011 Vintage Port is yet another brilliant vintage Port from Dirk Niepoort, indeed 2011 was a stunning vintage in general for Vintage Port. Despite being the second smallest shippers in the trade they are second to none in quality. Already famous for their classic tawny ports, they have now joined the ranks of the great producers of Vintage Port. Low yields combined with very good acidity and great colour turned up in a perfect year for Vintage Port and Niepoort 2011 Vintage Port continues the house tradition of creating balanced Ports with great concentration that are, at the same time, fine and delicate with a certain elegance. Grapes were sourced from several vineyards in the Cima Corgo andis a Douro field blend of Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinto Cão, Tinta Francisca, Tinta Amarela, Sousão and others, including Touriga Nacional with an average vine age of 80 to 100 years. The grapes were hand harvested and all the components for the Niepoort 2011 Vintage Port were trodden by foot in circular granite lagares at Vale de Mendiz, Niepoort’s Port winery. 100% stems were included in the vinification. The wines were racked soon after harvest, aged in toneis in the Douro over the winter, and then moved to Vila Nova de Gaia in March 2010. From there, they were re-tasted extensively in order to find the ideal components for the 2011 Vintage Port. The final blend then rested again in toneis and some pipes at the Niepoort lodges in Gaia, prior to bottling in June 2013.
