Winchester Distillery ‘Round Table’ Dry Gin is a tribute to the city of Winchester and an homage to the story of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table.
All of the Hampshire gins produced at the Winchester Distillery are distilled in a traditional copper pot still, a descendant of the alembic still. This small pot still is used to make small batches of spirits, which tend to be more complex and flavoursome when compared to gins produced via continuous distillation in large, commercial column stills.
Winchester Distillery’s ‘Round Table’ Dry Gin is crafted with 25 medieval botanicals. Each botanical symbolises one of the Knights of the Round Table, with Macedonian juniper berries representing King Arthur. These botanicals, historically used in food and medicine in the Middle Ages, are carefully selected from the Winchester region. While the full list remains a distillery secret, there are classic gin botanicals, including orris root, coriander seed, angelica, alongside more herbaceous ingredients (I am guessing that rosemary and thyme might be involved).
This Winchester Gin is bottled at 44% ABV, a little higher than Winchester Distillery’s other gins, which are normally bottled at 40% (apart from the Navy Strength Gunpowder Gin, bottled at 57% ABV!).
Winchester Distillery’s ‘Round Table’ Gin was launched on World Gin Day 2017 at Winchester Great Hall. The Great Hall is one of the finest surviving aisled halls of the 13th century (it was part of Winchester Castle) and contains one of the greatest symbols of medieval mythology, King Arthur’s Round Table.
The wall-hanging table was originally constructed in the 13th century and repainted in its present form for Henry VIII. Around the edge of the table are the names of King Arthur’s Knights, King Arthur sits at the top of the table, and there is a Tudor rose in the middle. This all features on the label with ornate gold detailing and chiselled branding.
Winchester Distillery is a small, artisanal spirits producer located in Winchester, Hampshire. The distillery was founded by ex-software developer Paul Bowler in 2014, who started with a small 25-litre still in his garage. The company specialises in producing high-quality spirits using traditional methods, modern energy-saving equipment and botanicals sourced from the local Hampshire area. They are most famous for their Twisted Nose Watercress Dry Gin.
Winchester Distillery ‘Round Table” Dry Gin is a rich and complex juniper-led gin with a multitude of herbaceous character, notes of rosemary and thyme and hints of apple, floral and citrus notes. It has an incredible depth of flavour with very complex, but subtle, herbal nuances.
Try mixing Winchester Distillery Round Table Dry Gin with Fever-Tree Mediterranean tonic and garnish with sprigs of Rosemary & Thyme and wheel of lemon.
