Cigar Profile:
The Cohiba Robusto is arguably one of the most iconic and sought-after Cuban cigars in the world, often considered the benchmark for the Robusto size.
Cohiba Robustos Tubos are a rich, deep and spicy cigar. A little more full-bodied than some other Cohibas, they display the characteristic spice and grass notes that Cohibas are renowned for. It is part of Cohiba’s Linea Clasica, and when it was launched in 1989, it helped kickstart the modern interest in Robusto-sized cigars.
Cohiba is the flagship Cuban Cigar brand of Habanos S.A. and was created in 1966. It was formally launched in 1968, for President Fidel Castro, and the cigars were made at the then top-secret, now world-famous, El Laguito factory (today some of the cigars are now made at the Partagas factory). Originally, Cohiba Cigars were only ever for the use of high-ranking government officials and for giving away as gifts to heads of state and visiting diplomats.
The Cohiba Cigar brand was first launched outside of Cuba at the 1982 Football World Cup in Spain. The name comes from the ancient Taino Indian word for the bunches of tobacco leaves that Columbus first saw being smoked by the original inhabitants of Cuba – the earliest known form of a Habano.
The tobacco leaves for Cohiba Cigars are the “selection of the selection” from the five finest plantations in the San Juan y Martinez and San Luis districts of the Vuelta Abajo zone. Uniquely amongst Havanas, up to three of Cohiba’s filler leaves, the seco, ligero and the rare medio tiempo, undergo an extra fermentation in barrels, which adds smoothness to the blend.
Presented in an individual cedar-lined aluminium tube.
The Cohiba Robusto delivers a complex and evolving flavour profile. Initial notes often include earthy and woody tones, along with a characteristic Cohiba spice or pepper. As the cigar develops, layers of flavour emerge, such as roasted nuts, coffee, and cocoa. A creamy texture and subtle sweetness or hints of vanilla can also be present, leading to a balanced finish that may include notes of leather.
Ideal pairings for the medium to full-bodied Cohiba Robusto include richer spirits like aged rum, whisky, or brandy, which complement its complex flavour profile.
Strong coffee, particularly espresso, is another excellent match, enhancing the cigar’s coffee and cocoa notes.
