Description

Mousehall Sussex Dry Gin is handcrafted at The Mousehall Estate near Mayfield in Sussex. It is a juniper-led, London Dry style of gin.

Mousehall Estate is located on the northern outskirts of Mayfield in East Sussex and is owned by Gary and Kathy Jordan. The Jordans are famous winemakers, well-known for the wines they produce at the Stellenbosch Kloof estate in South Africa.

Not content with conquering the wine world from South Africa, they have always had an eye on the UK. Since 2009, they have collaborated with Neleen Strauss in a London restaurant, High Timber. In 2017, the Jordans acquired the fabulous Sussex estate, which sits within the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty as part of their “retirement plan”. An old barn was converted into a distillery and winery in 2021, and the first wines and a craft English gin were made soon after.

A Family Project

Gary and Kathy’s daughter, Christy Jordan, is the head distiller. In 2019, Christy passed her distilling course in London and shortly afterwards worked at a Distillery in Ireland where she learned the art of distilling and blending.

In January 2022, Gary, Kathy, and Christy experimented with various neutral spirits, botanical quantities, and distillation blends, conducting blind tastings to perfect the recipe for a Sussex Gin. The final recipe was unanimously chosen for its balance and classic gin character.

Mousehall Sussex Dry Gin: Handcrafted in Sussex

Mousehall Sussex Dry Gin is made using 13 botanicals and a grape and grain 96% neutral spirit base. Like all of the Mousehall Spirits (there is also a cask-aged gin, vodka and elderflower aperitif produced), the gin is distilled in a 400-litre Mueller traditional copper pot still. The still is named “Amahle”, which means “Beautiful One” in the Zulu language.

To further honour the family’s South African heritage, the 13 botanicals include a blend of local Sussex-grown ingredients and South African ones, including the unique combination of South African rooibos tea and English coriander seed cultivated in Sussex.

Mousehall Gin Botanicals:

  • Juniper
  • Angelica root
  • Coriander seeds (grown locally in Sussex)
  • Cubebs
  • Celery seeds
  • Fennel seeds
  • Cardamom
  • Lemon verbena
  • Lavender
  • Rooibos (South African redbush tea, adding a floral, sweet note)
  • Fresh citrus

Due to the use of grape and grain spirit and the unique distillation and filtration methods, the resulting gin is well-balanced, complex, with perfectly integrated botanicals and a smooth, long finish. This gin is produced sustainably with 100% post-consumer recycled glass bottles and eco-friendly packaging.

Also at Mousehall: Tidebrook Wines

The family also released their first wines from Mousehall Estate in 2024, named Tidebrook Wines after the small river that runs through the estate. They currently produce a Pinot Noir, a Rosé and a Chardonnay.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Bright and aromatic with citrus, cardamom, and subtle rooibos notes.

Palate: Juniper-led with fresh citrus, floral lavender, and a hint of spice from cubeb and coriander, followed by rooibos’ natural sweetness.

Finish: Long, smooth, and creamy, enhanced by grape spirit and fennel seed.

To Serve

Perfect in a gin and tonic. Serve with Fever Tree Original Tonic Water and garnish with Grapefruit, Lime, Orange or Blood Orange (but not Lemon).

Also works well in a Negroni.
