Poli Marconi 46 Gin is an Italian Gin made in the Veneto region of Italy. This artisanal gin is distilled in small batches using a vacuum bain-marie still (“Crysopea”), which helps preserve delicate aromatics and gives a particularly clean, expressive profile. It is a very stylish, dry gin. Unmistakably Italian, less about citrus flash, more about Alpine freshness and structure.
Poli Marconi 46 Gin is distilled by Distillerie Poli in small batches in Poli’s Crysopea still. The Crysopea still is a truly innovative double boiler vacuum still developed with Poli and the Experimental Centre of the San Michele all’Adige Agricultural Institute. The project began in 2003. As far as I understand it, the vacuum part of the still allows the distillation of the alcohol to take place at a lower temperature than normal, which means that more fruity and floral components of the distillate are retained. The Crysopea still was bought into service in 2015.
The unique identity of Poli Marconi 46 Gin comes from the botanicals. These are carefully selected and inspired by the Asiago plateau in the north of Veneto, where the Poli family comes from, reminiscent of a walk through the forest.
There are seven botanicals in total:
Poli are most famous as artisan producers of Grappa. The distillery was founded in 1898 by GioBatta Poli and is located in Schiavon, near Bassano del Grappa, in the heart of Veneto. They also have a Grappa Museum in Bassano del Grappa. The company has always produced a range of grappa, brandies and liqueurs, to which can be added this fantastic gin.
Well, it is named after the Italian inventor Guglielmo Marconi, one of the pioneers of radio transmission; it is bottled at 46% ABV and the distillery is located at 46 Marconi Street in Schiavon.
This is the original Poli Gin, however, it has since been joined by Marconi 44 (orange and exotic spices), 42 (breezy and airy like a coastal sea breeze) and 21 (mint, liquorice and light as dandelion fluff!).
Is it me, or does the bottle remind you of The Botanist Gin bottle?
Nose: Bright, resinous juniper wrapped in cool, balsamic pine and fresh herbs. Think alpine air with a subtle floral sweetness.
Palate: Structured and clean. Juniper leads, but it’s softened by a silky, almost grapey roundness from the muscat. Herbal notes (mint, pine) build through the mid-palate, with spice adding lift rather than heat.
Finish: Long, dry, and aromatic with lingering notes of green herbs, soft spice, and a slightly resinous edge.
Gin and Tonic: Excellent in a G&T, especially with a rosemary or lemon peel garnish.
Negroni: Lends a woodsy, savoury twist to a Negroni compared to more citrus-heavy gins
Neat / on ice: Quite drinkable neat due to the texture from the sweet muscat grapes
