Foursquare Equipoise Single Blended Rum is a 14 Year Old Rum bottled at 61% ABV. It is the 25th release in Foursquare Distillery’s Exceptional Cask Selection (ECS) range of Rums. Rather interestingly, this is the first time that the team have released a bottling that utilises ex-Calvados casks as a part of the maturation process.
Foursquare Rum is produced by R L Seale, one of Barbados’ oldest trading houses, a family-owned business whose involvement in rum-making extends from father to son since 1820. The owner and talented head distiller, Richard Seale, is one of the region’s most innovative distillers and blenders and has a passion for producing perfect rum with great flavour. He also campaigns for clarity in the labelling of rums.
The Foursquare Distillery occupies the site of a former sugar factory that dates back to 1636 and, as one of the most modern and efficient rum distilleries in the world, is designed to be both highly energy-efficient and environmentally friendly. Foursquare rum is made from locally owned and sourced sugar cane converted to molasses, fermented very slowly over 44 hours with South African yeast and then distilled. The rum is a blend of pot still and column still rums. The pot still rum brings complexity and flavour whilst the column still rum adds balance and aroma.
Foursquare Equipoise a labelled as a single blended rum which, in the proposed Gargano / Seale Categorisation of Rum, is a blend of double retort pot still and traditional twin column rums from a single distillery, the direct comparison being with Blended Scotch Whisky – read more here.
Foursquare Equipoise is produced from a complex bill which brings together a 10 Year Old ex-Bourbon cask Rum which is matured for a further 4 years in ex-Calvados cask to make a total of fourteen years of ageing. This dual maturation is then further blended with a fourteen year old ex-Bourbon cask-aged Rum.
Fully matured at Foursquare, before blending and bottling. Bottled in October 2023 at 61% ABV without chill filtration, at its natural colour, and free from sweeteners and other flavourings.
Nose: Fresh ginger, dried raisins, tart Victoria plum skin and cooking apples. Dark chocolate, toffee and shortcrust pastry.
Palate: Soft creamy apple pie onto the palate. With gentle notes of coconut, and vanilla ice cream.
Finish: Dried hazelnuts, and more dried coconut. Coupled with astringent notes of black tea with a tartness, and a little fresh ginger heat.
