Portsmouth Distillery Mutiny Coconut Rum is the result of the Portsmouth Distillery Coconut Rum Trial that started in 2023. When it was decided that this coconut-flavoured rum would become a permanent fixture in their range, the distillery ran a competition for customers to name the rum and “Mutiny” was chosen. This is a coconut-flavoured rum rather than a sweet coconut liqueur!
The Portsmouth Distillery was established in 2018 by ex-Naval officers Vince Noyce and Giles Collighan and Dich Oatley, who has spent many years working in the wine trade. Vince and Giles shared a mutual love of rum, and the distillery was founded with the aim of making a Portsmouth Rum. Their first success was with Fort Gin at a time when the gin boom was in full swing, but rum takes time.
Their 1968 White Rum, the spiced Cinnabar Rum and a botanical Forum Rum were released early on, but the real aim of the project is to release barrel matured. They have since released the 1812 Three Year Old Rum, the 1747 Five Year Old Rum and, most recently, a Dark Navy Strength Rum.
The rum is produced at their Fort Cumberland distillery, which is located at Eastney Point at the entrance to Langstone Harbour. It is made from powdered sugar cane juice imported from Costa Rica, which is then rehydrated at the distillery. The sugar cane syrup is then fermented.
This is a long, slow fermentation (their very first fermentation took 4 weeks or so) before being distilled through the distillery’s 500 litre pot still (nicknamed Sophie Wu) and 4 plate column still. Sugar cane juice produces a different, more aromatic style of rum than those made from molasses.
Portsmouth Distillery Mutiny Coconut Rum is made by flavouring the 1968 White Rum with toasted coconut flakes. Toasted coconut flakes are macerated in the spirit for 7 weeks and the result is a lovely toasted coconut-flavoured rum.
Unlike the rest of the distillery’s range, Portsmouth Distillery Mutiny Coconut Rum is bottled at 40% ABV instead of 41%. This allows the full expression of toasty, coconut aromas and flavours. To finish, the rum is lightly sweetened with a touch of sugar syrup. 100% Natural Ingredients.
As mentioned, a competition was run to choose the name, so I assume my suggestion of “Son of ’68” was unsuccessful! However, I suppose that “Mutiny”, with its connection to the film and book Mutiny On The Bounty, is a deft play on words, subtly referencing the coconut-y Bounty bar.
Portsmouth Distillery Mutiny Coconut Rum is a great blend of the 1986 White Rum’s floral and herbaceous character combined with sweet, vanilla, toasty, nutty and coconut flavours and aromas. A whisper of sweetness on the finish makes this a very easy rum to drink!
Good enough to drink neat or over ice and great in a rum and coke with a wedge of lime. Or make a quick Pina Colada with some pineapple juice.
