Basil Haydens Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey is a small batch Bourbon based upon a Bourbon from the 18th Century created by Master Distiller Basil Hayden. In 1796 Hayden “broke the rules” of whiskey making by mixing small grains in the mash with the traditional corn base. He was one of the first distillers who saw that the spiciness of rye would complement the sweet smoothness of the corn.
Today Basil Haydens is owned by Beam Inc and it pays homage to the Hayden’s original blend by having a higher rye content than most Bourbon whiskies giving it a it a spicier profile than some other whiskies. The brand was introduced, as part of Beam’s small batch Bourbons, in 1992.
It is one of the lightest-bodied Bourbons in the Beam family of small batch Bourbon (compared to Knob Creek, Bookers and Bakers) and is bottles at 40% abv. Previously this was bottled as an 8 year old, but today it is bottled as a non age statement whiskey (NAS) and is described on the label as “Artfully Aged”.
