Hatozaki Triple Cask Reserve Whisky is the third permanent release from the Kaikyo Distillery.
This no age statement (NAS) blended malt whisky joins Kaikyo Distillery’s existing lineup alongside their Finest Blended and Small Batch Pure Malt expressions. The Triple Cask name refers to the three-stage maturation process: initial ageing in ex-Bourbon and ex-Sherry casks, followed by that distinctive Umeshu plum liqueur finish.
This premium Japanese Whisky is handcrafted, carefully blended and matured by Master Blender & Distiller Kimio Yonezawa. This blended malt combines Scottish distillation heritage with Japanese precision and an innovative cask finish. Hatozaki Triple Cask Whisky is a distinctive addition for collectors and modern whisky enthusiasts seeking modern Japanese whiskies.
“Finishing a whisky in Umeshu plum liqueur barrels is rare in the whisky world, and I wanted to explore how the flavorful plum liqueur influence would transform the blend. The intense plum aromas add a layer of depth and subtle sweetness that sets it apart from other traditionally distilled whiskies.” Kimio Yonezawa, Master Blender & Distiller
Hatozaki Whisky is an exciting new Japanese Whisky project made by the Kaikyo Distillery which is located in the town of Akashi, Hyogo, Japan. The Kaikyo Distillery is based at the historic Akashi Sake Brewery, whose Sake is well known via their Akashi-Tai brand.
Hatozaki Whisky is named after the nearby Hatozaki Lighthouse, the oldest stone lighthouse in Japan, in operation since 1620. Kaikyo Distillery is named after the famous Akashi-Kaikyo Bridge which lies in front of the distillery. The sea winds and salty breezes provide ideal and unique conditions for ageing whiskies.
The Yonezawa family have been brewing Sake since 1856 and began distilling in 1917. The company was acquired in 2016 by Mossburn Distillers & Blenders (a new independent Scotch Whisky company) and, with their 100th anniversary of distilling approaching, Mossburn installed two new alembic stills made by the old Scottish firm of Forsythes to secure the future of whisky production at Kaikyo.
