Kavalan Distillery LÁN Single Malt Whisky is a premium Taiwanese whisky from Kavalan Distillery, created for the international market as a tribute to its home in Yilan County. It is matured in a combination of ex-bourbon and port casks, and enhanced by Kavalan’s signature STR vinho wine barriques and offers a refined, floral profile.
Delicate orchid, rose, and jasmine notes are layered with creamy vanilla, caramel sweetness, and gentle spice, leading to a smooth finish with hints of cinnamon and toasted nuts. Elegant and approachable, it’s a refined step up for those exploring Taiwanese single malt whisky. Available to buy now at Fareham Wine Cellar.
STR stands for Shaved, Toasted, and Re-Charred casks—a method developed by whisky consultant Dr Jim Swan around 2010, during a global shortage of refill casks. As a young distillery, Kavalan struggled to secure traditional ex-bourbon barrels, so Swan proposed repurposing ex-wine casks instead. However, these casks often contain residual organic acids, which can introduce unwanted astringency to the whisky.
The shaving, toasting, and re-charring of ex-wine casks refines the wood by stripping away harsher acidic elements. This process reshapes the lignin within the oak, unlocking flavourful compounds like vanillin and caramelised sugars, which in turn lend the spirit a smoother, richer sweetness.
“LÁN” is a distinctive whisky created in homage to Yilan, the home of Kavalan Distillery. Its name also carries the meaning of “orchid” in Mandarin Chinese, a nod to Taiwan’s reputation as the Kingdom of Orchids.
This floral, new world whisky is inspired by the award-winning “King Car Peach” orchid, exclusively cultivated by Kavalan’s parent company, King Car. It is this pink orchid which features on the label.
Distillery Founder, Mr Tien-Tsai Lee says, “Our port-aged LÁN Whisky captures the delicate floral aromas of the King Car Peach orchid. It offers a sophisticated blend of vanilla and roasted nuts, enriched by our signature STR technique using Vinho wine casks, resulting in a smooth, fruity profile with layers of caramel sweetness.”
The Kavalan Distillery was founded back in 2005, launching their first whisky to market in 2008. The company was established after the de-monopolisation of the alcohol market in Taiwan in 2002 by entrepreneur Mr Tien-Tsai Lee, who wanted to create Taiwan’s first whisky. His journey took him to distilleries in Scotland and Japan, researching what it takes to make the best whisky. Soon, with advice from renowned whisky consultant Dr Jim Swan, the distillery became a reality. The distillery is owned by The King Car Group, which was founded by Mr Lee in 1979.
The distillery is located in Yuanshan Township, Yilan County, in the northeast of the country (Kavalan is the county’s old name). The whisky is crafted using pure, mineral-rich meltwaters drawn from Snow Mountain, and shaped by Taiwan’s remarkable subtropical microclimate – a potent blend of intense heat and humidity, gently tempered by refreshing sea and mountain breezes.
Colour: Deep, polished amber with golden highlights
Nose: Aromas of orchid and rose are layered with jasmine, peony, and a hint of orange blossom. Beneath the floral notes lies a rich foundation of creamy vanilla, milk chocolate, and caramel, brightened by notes of honeydew melon and playful fruit gummies.
Palate: The mouthfeel is elegant and refreshing. The floral character carries through, seamlessly intertwined with the distillery’s signature tropical fruit profile. Mid-palate, the influence of the STR Vinho Barriques emerges, offering velvety chocolate and cream notes that provide a sophisticated weight to the spirit.
Finish: Long and resonant. The sweetness transitions into a refined, woody fragrance, defined by toasted nuts and warming cinnamon. It leaves a lingering impression evocative of a distant, sun-drenched forest.
Perfect for sipping neat or on the rocks.
