Dow’s 10 Year Old Tawny Port is a premium aged tawny port from Portugal’s Douro Valley, renowned for its distinctive drier house style and exceptional balance. Matured in seasoned oak casks, it combines rich dried fruit flavours with elegant nutty complexity, making it an outstanding after-dinner wine, aperitif or luxury gift.
Unlike many traditional Port houses, Dow’s allows its wines to ferment for slightly longer before fortification. This crucial step draws out more grape sugars, resulting in a slightly drier, beautifully balanced finish. While still wonderfully rich, sweet, and full-bodied, this drier house style ensures that Dow’s 10 Year Old Tawny Port never feels cloying on the palate, making it a sophisticated wine which can be served as an aperitif or after a meal.
The secret to the deep colour and vibrant character of Dow’s Aged Tawnies lies in their unique cellaring process. While standard tawny ports age entirely in smaller pipes, Dow’s traditionally ages a significant proportion of their wines in massive, seasoned oak balseiros (vats ranging from 5,000 to 10,000 litres).
This larger volume reduces the wine’s direct contact with oxygen and wood. As it matures quietly in the cellars of the Bomfim and Boa Vista Lodges, the Port retains a remarkably attractive fruit character and a deeper, richer hue than many other 10-year-old tawnies on the market, all while developing classic notes of:
Warm dried fruits and raisins
Toasted nuts and subtle spice
Smooth, elegant caramel nuances
Dow’s Port has been a cornerstone of the premium Port trade since 1912, the year Andrew James Symington became a partner and forever tied his family’s name to the finest vineyards of the Upper Douro. More than a century later, the fifth generation of the Symington family continues to manage the historic house, supervising everything from the vine to the final bottling.
This dedication to quality started early; by acquiring the legendary estates of Quinta Senhora da Ribeira (1890) and Quinta do Bomfim (1896), Dow’s became one of the first firms to secure its own premium vineyards – ensuring an unbroken tradition of sourcing exceptional fruit for their world-famous wines.
