Description

Taylor’s 1970 Very Old Single Harvest Port is the 7th release in a series of limited edition Tawny Ports released by Taylors when they are 50 years old and will make an excellent 50th birthday or anniversary gift in 2020.

About Taylor’s Tawny Port

Taylor’s Port have one of the largest holdings of very old cask-aged Ports in the Douro. These old Ports are single vintage Ports aged in seasoned oak casks, that is, they are single vintage Tawny Ports (which are also known as “Colheita” Ports). Taylor’s first started releasing some of these older Tawny Ports as limited editions when they were 50 years old in 2014 with the 1964 Vintage. 1970 was also a declared vintage for Vintage Port “proper”, not to be confused with this Tawny Port.

Taylor’s 1970 Very Old Single Harvest Port

Taylor’s 1970 Very Old Single Harvest Port is made from grapes harvested in 1970 and has spent many years quietly ageing away in oak cask in Taylor’s cellars. This long period of oak ageing gives this Port its characteristic amber / tawny colour, smooth palate, complex, mellow flavours and rich aromas of dried fruits, nutty character and caramel nuances. As this will only have been bottled recently, the Port will not need decanting (it will have been filtered at bottling) and is ready to drink. It is best served slightly chilled, between 12ºC and 16ºC.

The bottle is presented in a classic frosted Taylor’s Port bottle, in a high-quality beech wood box, and there are only a very limited number of bottles available worldwide.

Tasting Notes

“Pale mahogany core surrounded by a broad pale gold rim with subtle olive highlights. On first impression, the wine is lifted and ethereal but soon begins to unfurl layer after layer of multi-dimensional aroma. On the palate, the wine has a smooth, velvety texture. Rich, dense and sumptuous, it coats the tongue with opulent mellow flavour, coffee and butterscotch with hints of walnut and candied orange peel, but with a remarkable freshness from the current of lively acidity which runs through the palate into the extraordinary long finish. A wonderfully elegant, finely constituted and beautifully matured port delivering a surge of rich flavour with every sip.”

David Guimaraens, Taylor’s Head Winemaker
