Chateau Burgozone Via Istrum Cellar Selection Pinot Noir is a dry red wine from northern Bulgaria. It is bottled as a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) Danube Plain, a wine-growing appellation which was introduced when Bulgaria joined the EU in 2007.
Chateau Burgozone is a boutique, family-owned winery which was established in 2002. The estate is situated at the same latitude as Tuscany, with its vineyards thriving on slopes between 150 and 180 meters above sea level. The Burgozone vineyard covers some 100 hectares and is planted on the slopes of the River Danube in Northern Bulgaria overlooking Esperanto Island. The vineyard is planted with eleven international grape varieties and two indigenous varieties, the red grape Gamza and the white grape Tamyanka, which flourish in the calcareous loess soils.
The soils benefit from a moderate continental climate, the region enjoys warm days and cool nights, enhanced by its proximity to the Danube River. The vines, averaging 10 years of age, thrive in this unique microclimate, which allows for the production of high-quality grapes. All the grapes are manually harvested and the wines are bottled at the estate. In the vineyard, careful canopy management practices and green harvesting techniques result in a regulated yield ranging between 20 hl/ha and 45 hl/ha. The estate is committed to sustainable and ecological responsibility through the practice of integrated viticulture. A new winery and bottling line was completed in 2010.
Pinot Noir has found a home in northern Bulgaria along the banks of the Danube River. The Chateau Burgozone Via Istrum Cellar Selection Pinot Noir is produced from hand-harvested grapes from vineyards with reduced yields. The vineyards are planted with a mix of different Pinot Noir clones which contribute to the wine’s complexity and depth. After harvest, the grapes undergo a cold pre-fermentation maceration, temperature-controlled cool fermentation and standard fermentation. The wine is aged for 9 to 12 months in French oak.
The wine is named after the remains of the ancient Burgozone fortress which can be found in the vineyards and from which all sorts of artifacts, ceramis and pottery have been excavated. The fortress was built on the ancient Roman road Via Istrum which used to connect Constantinople and Belgrade and served to defend the Northern borders of the Roman Empire.
The Via Istrum range of wines is the producer’s premium offering of wines and sits above their entry point “Cote du Danube” range.
This Bulgarian Pinot Noir is a dark, ruby-red colour. The nose has prominent aromas of red and black fruits with hints of flowers, leather, herbaceous notes and a hint of chocolate. The palate features a well-balanced blend of ripe black and red fruits, including cherry and plum, with earthy undertones. Floral and leathery notes provide additional complexity. There is a touch of natural sweetness and the finish is well-balanced, smooth and lingering
Try with chicken, duck or turkey dishes. It also works well with pasta and pizza dishes or vegetarian risotto.
It would also work well with a charcuterie board and soft cheeses like Brie or Camembert.
