Errazuriz Las Pizarras Syrah is a cool-climate, coastal-influenced Syrah produced by Errazuriz at their Anconcagua Valley estate. Errazuriz has been fine-tuning this wine. It is a floral expression, with aromatic fruit, expressive, pure and elegant. Hints of spice wrapped in a fine structure. According to their winemaker, Tomas Munoz, 2023 is their best release so far.
“…The latest set of Las Pizarras bottlings is outstanding…” Matthew Luczy, Wine Advocate.
The Errazuriz Las Pizarras range of wines consists of a Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Syrah, sourced from specific blocks of vines on the Errazuriz estate.
A five-year soil study by renowned French geologist Françoise Vannier-Petit, combined with an intimate knowledge of the vineyards, has helped identify these “grand cru” sites, which have a high proportion of metamorphic rock, including slate – indeed, “pizarras” is the Spanish name for slate.
The cool climate location, uniqueness of its metamorphic-rich soils and elevations enable each small plot to ripen at its own pace, while the closeness to the cold Pacific Ocean and well-drained soils contribute to high quality grapes with exceptional complexity, depth, minerality and natural acidity.
The Syrah fruit for this wine comes from Quillota, just 12 kilometres from the Pacific. Fruit comes from two individual plots – Plot 96 (Pizarra) 0.6 hectares, and Plot 115 (Ceniza Santa) 2.6 hectares.
These plots have very shallow soils, 50cm schistous topsoil to weathered slate and large gravel stones. The weathering of the slate increases the cracks and fractures, allowing the vines to develop a strong root system. This gives the wines minerality, velvety tannins and freshness.
Viña Errazuriz was founded in 1870 when Don Maximiano Errazuriz planted his first vineyards at Panquehue in the Aconcagua Valley, some 100 km north of the capital, Santiago. The tradition of quality lives on with Don Maximiano’s descendant, Eduardo Chadwick, the fifth generation of his family to be involved in the wine business.
Errazuriz is a pioneer producer of the Aconcagua Valley and is well-known for its innovative approach to winemaking. They produce a range of quality, great value estate wines, as well as a series of icon wines including Don Maximiano, KAI Carmenere and Las Pizzaras Wines. All are available to buy now at Fareham Wine Cellar.
“Deep, intense purple-red colour, with violet hues. Aromas of dark fruits such as fresh blueberries and currants combine with floral notes of lavender, alongside spicy hints of incense and pink pepper. In the palate, intense flavours of ripe fruit, such as red cherries and blueberries, are accompanied by spicy notes. With excellent length and balance, it shows good acidity that contributes to its high juiciness. The chalky tannins result in a wine with good grip and persistence on the palate.”
Tomas Munoz, Chief Winemaker
Try with grilled ribeye, venison with berry sauce, herb-crusted rack of lamb or slow-roasted shoulder.
For vegetarians, it would work well with grilled vegetables with oregano and thyme or mushroom risotto with sage.
For the cheeseboard, try with an aged Gruyere or Manchego or Gorgonzola.
