Approachable in its youth yet refined enough to complement a wide range of dishes, Paul Cluver Village Pinot Noir is an excellent introduction to the exceptional quality of Elgin wines.
Whether you are looking to buy South African Pinot Noir online or discover one of the Cape’s finest cool-climate producers, this wine delivers outstanding value and classic varietal character.
The estate has nearly 22 hectares of Pinot Noir planted. The oldest vineyards date back to 1990, while the newest were planted in 2021. The vines grow predominantly on decomposed Bokkeveld Shale with underlying clay soils at elevations of 280 to 400 metres above sea level. Fruit for the Village Pinot Noir comes from the estate’s younger vineyards, producing a pure, vibrant and silky expression of Elgin Pinot Noir.
The foundation of Paul Cluver Family Wines dates back to 1896 when the Cluver family acquired De Rust Farm in Elgin. Originally devoted to livestock and fruit production, particularly apples, the estate entered the wine industry during the 1980s under renowned neurosurgeon Dr Paul Clüver.
Recognising Elgin’s exceptional cool-climate potential, Stellenbosch Farmers Winery (SFW) approached Clüver and subsequently planted the region’s first commercial vineyards on the estate in 1986. The inaugural wine, a Weisser Riesling, was released in 1990 and produced at Nederburg Estate. The estate winery was completed in 1996, with winemaker Andries Burger overseeing the first estate vintage, a role he continues today.
Today, the estate is managed by Paul Cluver, Dr Clüver’s son, and focuses on terroir-driven wines from cool-climate varieties, particularly Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Sustainability remains central to the winery’s philosophy, with extensive conservation programmes protecting the indigenous fynbos vegetation surrounding the vineyards while ensuring the long-term health of this unique wine-growing environment.
