Simon Hackett Old Vine Grenache is a bright, approachable 100% Grenache red wine from Australia that punches well above its price point. The wine is made from grapes sourced from the Big Rivers wine-growing zone of Australia, a wine-growing region which covers the southwestern corner of New South Wales. This juicy red wine bursts with fresh cherries and red liquorice, with hints of chocolate and spice, while the palate delivers juicy cherry, plum and mulberry. Buy now at Fareham Wine Cellar.
Simon Hackett Wines was established by Simon Hackett, a highly respected McLaren Vale winemaker with deep roots in South Australian wine. Born and raised in the Barossa Valley, Simon came from a family with four generations of agricultural heritage in the region, closely tied to the wine trade for many years.
His winemaking journey began in 1968 at Saltram Winery, where he apprenticed under the legendary Peter Lehmann. In 1973, he relocated to McLaren Vale to join the Southern Vales Co-operative Winery (now Tatachilla), working alongside Grant Burge and advancing to Senior Winemaker after eight years of dedicated service.
In 1984, Simon launched his own label as a part-time venture, later acquiring the historic Taranga winery in 1998 to gain full control over production. With deliberately low yields, his annual output rarely exceeds 10,000 cases, ensuring exceptional quality and concentration in every bottle. Simon’s wines beautifully reflect the man himself: timelessly elegant packaging, approachable character, and vibrant, life-affirming energy.
Tragically, Simon passed away in early 2026, but his legacy endures through the continued stewardship of his long-time UK agents, Awin, Barrett and Siegel.

The Big Rivers GI is one of Australia’s largest and most productive wine zones. Created as a Geographical Indication in 1996, it covers a vast 650 km stretch of southwestern New South Wales along the Murray, Darling, Murrumbidgee and Lachlan rivers (with parts extending into northwestern Victoria). It includes four sub-regions – Murray Darling, Perricoota, Riverina and Swan Hill – and produces around 75% of all New South Wales wine, making it the state’s biggest wine region and the second-largest in Australia after South Australia’s Riverland.
Big Rivers is famous for approachable, fruit-forward, great-value wines, yet quality is rising fast. The Simon Hackett Big Rivers Grenache is a perfect example: bright, juicy and outstanding value from carefully selected parcels in this productive zone.
