McHenry Hohnen Burnside Vineyard Chardonnay is a single-vineyard white from a 40-year-old, dry-farmed vineyard on the banks of the Margaret River, Western Australia.
The Hohnen and McHenry families have been growing grapes in Western Australia since the 1970s, but it wasn’t until 2006 that David Hohnen joined his brother-in-law, Murray McHenry, to found McHenry Hohnen Wines. Today, they source premium fruit from family-owned vineyard sites in the southern part of the Margaret River wine region.
The Mediterranean climate of Margaret River – with warm days, cool nights, and maritime breezes – is perfectly suited to growing grape varieties from southern France and Spain, while also reflecting the region’s strong heritage with Bordeaux varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot.
At McHenry Hohnen, common-sense farming and biodynamic principles guide every decision. They cultivate a thriving ecosystem where soil, microorganisms, plants, insects, and animals coexist in natural equilibrium. Vineyard management follows sustainable, ‘old-school’ practices that prioritise soil health, biodiversity, and minimal intervention.
McHenry Hohnen Burnside Vineyard
100% Burnside Vineyard. Located on the bend of the Margaret River, this old vineyard grows on unique micaceous and granitic soils. The Chardonnay rows are on a steep northerly aspect running in a north-west, southeast orientation.
McHenry Hohnen Burnside Chardonnay Winemaking
Voluptuous and expressive, this wine shows fresh almond pastry, pink grapefruit zest, and roasted hazelnut aromatics. Wild fermentation with full solids adds a flinty complexity and the extended time on fine lees contributes a delicious savoury character to the palate, which is powerful yet defined by a fine frame of natural acidity. From an old heritage vineyard on the south bank of the Margaret River itself, this intensely flavoured Chardonnay captures the distinctive character of this site.
