Grand Marnier Cordon Rouge, the iconic expression available at Fareham Wine Cellar, is a luxurious French liqueur with a storied heritage dating back to 1880. It was created by Louis-Alexandre Marnier-Lapostolle (often referred to as Alexandre Marnier-Lapostolle), a visionary who blended premium Cognac with an exotic essence of bitter oranges (Bigarade oranges sourced from the Caribbean). This innovative combination elevated it beyond typical orange liqueurs, earning its place as a timeless classic.
The liqueur’s origins trace even further to 1827, when Jean-Baptiste Lapostolle established the family’s first distillery in Neauphle-le-Château near Paris, initially producing fruit liqueurs. The breakthrough came with the marriage and collaboration that led to this signature recipe, which has remained largely unchanged for nearly 150 years. Today, Grand Marnier is proudly produced by Maison Marnier-Lapostolle (now under Campari Group influence), continuing a legacy of craftsmanship passed down through generations.
At its core, Grand Marnier Cordon Rouge is a sophisticated blend featuring approximately 51% fine Cognac—sourced from the premier crus of the Cognac region and aged in French oak barrels for depth and complexity—with the remaining portion consisting of distilled essence of wild bitter oranges, sugar, and subtle infusions. This high Cognac content distinguishes it from standard triple secs (which typically use neutral spirits), delivering a richer, more refined profile with warmth, silkiness, and layered sophistication.
Available in the classic red-ribboned (Cordon Rouge) bottle at Fareham Wine Cellar, this is more than just an orange liqueur—it’s a celebration of French artistry, exotic ingredients, and enduring tradition. Perfect for gifting or stocking your home bar for special occasions.
Appearance: A brilliant topaz-amber hue with glowing golden tones.
Aroma: Inviting and aromatic, with prominent fresh orange zest and candied peel notes upfront, complemented by vanilla, subtle floral hints, and the warm, nutty depth of Cognac.
Palate: Velvety and balanced, it opens with bright, bittersweet orange flavors that give way to harmonious Cognac undertones of hazelnut, toffee, caramelized sugar, and a touch of vanilla and oak. The bitterness from the orange essence adds elegance and prevents excessive sweetness while the Cognac provides structure and a gentle warmth.
Finish: Long, harmonious, and lingering, with echoes of burnt orange, candied peel and a smooth, satisfying sweetness.
Enjoy Grand Marnier Cordon Rouge neat as a refined digestif after dinner, or gently chilled / on the rocks to appreciate its complexity.
It’s exceptionally versatile in cocktails—elevating classics like the Sidecar, Margarita, or B-52—and shines in the timeless French dessert Crêpes Suzette, where it’s flambéed to create that signature caramelised orange sauce, or simply drizzled over crêpes for an indulgent treat.
In France, it’s particularly cherished for these culinary applications, but its bold yet balanced profile makes it a favourite worldwide for both sipping and mixing.
