Description

KTW Iveria Tvishi is a naturally semi-sweet white wine from Georgia. It is makde from 100% Tsolikauri grapes grown in the Kakheti wine-growing region, the largest in Georgia. The grapes come from the Tvishi microzone which is locaetd on the right bank of the River Rioni.

Kakhetian Traditional Winemaking (KWT) is one of the largest wine and spirit producing companies in Georgia and the Caucasus region. The company was founded in 2001 and aims to preserve the history and traditional techniques (the use of earthenware amphora, called qvevri) of Georgian wine-making whilst also merging them with modern winemaking and innovation. KTW was included in Forbes Georgia’s 2020 list of 50 largest Georgian businesses.

KTW works with over 50 different indigenous grape varieties comprising 600 hectares of vineyards located in many different wine-growing regions of Georgia and produces many styles of wine including white, red and the famous semi-sweet red styles. Often regarded as “the birthplace of wine”, Georgia has over 500 native grape varieties.

The 100% Tsolikauri grapes for the KTW Iveria Tvishi Semi Sweet White wine come from the Lechkhumi region in the Tvishi microzone from vineyards located between 500 and 800 metres above sea level. The grapes are picked late in the season, towards the end of October, when they have reached full maturity and ripeness. The wine is then vinified as normal but the fermentation is stopped by cooling the wine down when the fermenting juice reaches optimum sugar/acidity balance to produce a semi sweet white wine.

The Tsolikauri grape variety is a light, yellow-green skinned white grape variety and is primarily grown in the western part of Georgia, particularly in the region of Imereti. It is widely planted and is used to make everything from dry white throuhg to sweeter wines, like this one, and also sparkling wines. Legend has it that is was a favourite of Joseph Stalin.

Tasting Notes

KTW Iveria Tvishi Semi Sweet White has a lovely golden colour and aromas of medlar, apricots, fresh apple and floral, honeyed notes. This is a medium bodied wine and has a wonderful balance of zesty acidity and sweetness.

Food Pairing

This is a great semi sweet wine for those that prefer a sweeter table wine. It works very well with fruits and fruit salads, particularly cherry, strawberry, melon and pear.

It is also a good match for fish, poultry and white meat dishes, particualry if they have a bit of spice. Otherwise pair it with roast chicken or port, or the sort of dishes where you might have served a German Spatlese.

Also good with lighter, fresher cheeses.
