Description

Castello Banfi Rosso di Montalcino Poggio Alla Mura is an Italian red wine made from 100% Sangiovese grapes. This Rosso di Montalcino comes from the same region as its more famous big brother, Brunello di Montalcino. Stylistically, Rosso di Montalcino is a younger, fruitier style of wine compared to Brunello.

Castello Banfi, Founded in 1978

Castello Banfi was founded in 1978 by two Italian-American brothers, John and Harry Mariani. The goal of the two brothers was to create a state-of-the-art winery combined with the most advanced science in the vineyards for the production of premium wines. Today the family holds estates in Montalcino, Bolgheri, Chianti and Piedmont.

In the last 40 years, the company has been at the forefront of the revival of Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino,  engaging in significant academic studies into the region’s geology, climate and different Sangiovese clones. They also now own the historic Bruzzone winery in Piedmont (founded 1860).

Located in the Heart of Montalcino

The Castello Banfi estate is located in Montalcino, between Siena and the Maremma, and is situated at the confluence of the Orcia and Ombrone rivers. The estate extends along the southern slopes of the township of Montalcino across 7,100 acres of land; one third of the property is under specialised vine and the balance is shared between olive groves, wheat fields, plum trees, truffle stands, forest and scrub.

Poggio Alla Mura Vineyard

The grapes for the Banfi Rosso di Montalcino come from dedicated vineyards sloping down from the historic Poggio alle Mura Castle. The vineyard area is characterised by slopes with a good incline where the soils develop on reddish continental and clay sediments with a significant presence of stones and pebbles. The Sangiovese is from a combination of internally selected clones, dating from 1982.
