Description

Banfi La Pettegola Vermentino is a white white made by Castello Banfi. It is made with grapes sourced from the Maremma zone of Southern Tuscany. It was first produced in 2012.

The Castello Banfi estate is located in Montalcino and at the confluence of the Orcia and Ombrone rivers. The estate extends along the southern slopes of the township of Montalcino across 7,100 acres of land; one third of the property is under specialized vine and the balance is shared between olive groves, wheat fields, plum trees, truffle stands, forest and scrub.

Castello Banfi was founded in 1978 by two Italian-American brothers, John and Harry Mariani. The goal of the two brothers was to create a state-of-the-art winery combined with the most advanced science in the vineyards to produce premium wines.  Today they have estates in Montalcino, Bolgheri, Chianti and Piedmont. In the last 40 years, they have been at the forefront of the revival of Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino,  engaging in significant academic studies into the region’s geology, climate and different Sangiovese clones. They also own the historic Bruzzone winery in Piedmont (founded 1860).

The 100% Vermentino grapes for the Banfi La Pettegola Vermentino come from vineyards located in the Maremma zone of Southern Tuscany. The vines are between 5 and 10 years old and they are planted on sandstone soils with a strong presence of friable rock. After harvest, following a very soft pressing, the fermentation takes place for about 13-16 days in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks.

About the Vermentino Grape

Vermentino is a white grape variety principally grown in the coastal regions of northwestern Italy, particularly in Liguria and Sardinia. The grape is thought to have originated in the Mediterranean basin but some say that it may have first been cultivated in Spain before being brought to Italy. It is one of the main white grape varieties used in the Cinque Terre region, as well as in other coastal areas of Italy like Maremma in Tuscany and the island of Corsica. Wines range in style from unoaked, fresh, and bright to more complex expressions that undergo barrel fermentation and ageing.
