Domaine Jones Vineyard Collection Rouge Cérise is an outlier from old vine specialist Katie Jones; it is one of her only wines made from young vines. This wine is designed for those looking for a lighter, refreshing style of red wine that can be enjoyed slightly chilled. A perfect wine for warmer weather or casual dining.
The grapes for Domaine Jones Vineyard Collection Rouge Cérise wine come from a younger vineyard of Carignan planted by Katie’s late husband Jean-Marc Astruc. The Grenache component comes from Katie’s Artigas vineyard. The wine is vinified in stainless steel.
“Rouge Cérise” translates to “Cherry Red,” reflecting the wine’s fresh, cherry-forward character and approachable style. The name of the wine is inspired by the wild cherry trees, which can be found scattered around Katie’s many vineyards and the vibrant, fresh, red cherry fruit perfume and colour of the wine. The accent on the “e” of cerise was a mistake, but Katie left it in place as it “captured the joyful, slightly rebellious nature of this wine.”
Domaine Jones is owned and run by Katie Jones. Katie was the Sales and Marketing Director for the Mont Tauch co-operative in the Languedoc-Roussillon for nearly twenty years until she fell in love with a small 3.5 hectare vineyard in the Maury Valley in 2007. Katie acquired the vineyard, called La Sanayre Est, in 2008.
Since then, Katie has quietly been collecting neglected, low-yielding, old vine vineyards around the village of Tuchan. She has plantings of all sorts of grape varieties, including Grenache Gris, Carignac Gris, Muscat, Macabeu for the white wines and Grenache Noir, Syrah, Carignan and Lledoner Pelut A.K.A. Hairy Grenache.
The wine-making philosophy at Domaine Jones is to employ traditional, down-to-earth farming methods and innovative winemaking techniques to capture the characteristics of the terroir and the local area. The wines are only produced in tiny quantities, in some cases, the odd barrel or two; this truly is boutique wine-making. Katie’s wines have a surprising purity and freshness, due to the relatively high altitude of the vineyards, which is unusual for wines from this area.
