Description

Kakira 5 Year Old Dark Rum is a premium Ugandan dark rum produced by Kakira Sugar Limited. This small-batch, pot-still rum is aged in ex-bourbon and ex-Sherry casks via a solera system, delivering rich tropical and dessert-like notes of banana, coconut, almond, toffee, and more. This distinctive African rum is also available in 20cl bottles, ideal for sampling, hampers, gifts, and stocking fillers.

Crafted at the Kakira Distillery

Kakira is a “Field to Bottle” producer (also sometimes called “grass to glass”). As well as their own sugar cane estates, they also work with local sugar farmer partnerships growing sugar cane. The cane sugar is refined at the Kakira Sugar Refinery, where molasses are basically a by-product of sugar production.

The molasses is taken to the Kakira Distillery where it is fermented, distilled and aged. All of the spirits are bottled at the Kakira Distillery. Kakira produces a range of award-winning spirits with a focus on Rum, Vodka and Gin. Traditional copper pot stills are used for the rum, and column stills are used for Kakira vodka and gin production.

About Kakira Sugar Limited (KSL)

Kakira Sugar is principally a Ugandan sugar producer which grows sugar cane on the shores of Lake Victoria, the source of the River Nile. The company was founded in 1930 by Muljibhai Madhvani and is based in the city of Jinja. It has since grown into the largest sugar refinery in Uganda and remains family-owned and run by Madhvani’s son and grandson.

Sustainability

Sustainability is very important to the company and its founding principle was to decrease waste and the carbon footprint during sugar production, which can be a water-intensive and energy-consuming process.

The distillery’s water comes from a private feed from Lake Victoria. The entire process is powered by 100% renewable electricity by one of the largest facilities of its kind in Africa. It is powered by the biofuel “bagasse”, the dry, fibrous residue left after crushing sugarcane.

Community Action

Kakira Sugar Limited (KSL) provides extensive support to its employees and surrounding communities, including housing for over 4,000 workers, clean water, electricity, roads, a 75-bed hospital serving more than 100,000 people, 16 schools educating over 4,000 children, and various scholarship programmes through the Madhvani Foundation and Kakira Sugar Busoga Foundation for university and vocational training.

Tasting Notes

Kakira 5 Year Old Dark Rum is a rich, warming dark rum with aromas and flavours of roasted banana, sweet coconut, almond, toffee, vanilla, honey, mocha, dark chocolate, raisin, and caramel. This is layered with subtle nutty and dried fruit accents (think cherry or cranberry). A smooth, complex palate leads to a toffee-like finish with gentle spice.

To Serve

Enjoy this dark rum neat or on the rocks or mix into classics like rum and cola, Dark & Stormy or other cocktails.

Try with barbecued meats with spicy glazes, jerk chicken, or rich desserts like banoffee pie and dark chocolate fondant.
