Pusser’s Rum: The Legacy of British Navy Rum

Pusser’s Rum is produced by Demerara Distillers Ltd in Guyana and is named after the Royal Navy Slang for a purser, a ship’s supply officer. For more than 300 years, sailors of the Royal Navy were issued a daily rum ration or “tot”, a highly welcome daily comfort when one was away from home for many months. The Rum Ration was abolished on the 31st July 1970 (Black Tot Day), and the Pusser’s Rum name quietly lay dormant until 1979 when the entrepreneur Charles Tobias sought to resurrect the Pusser’s Rum tradition.

Charles Tobias managed to obtain the rights and the blending information from the Admiralty, set up Pusser’s Rum Ltd on Tortola and, in 1980, began selling Pusser’s Rum to the public for the very first time. In return, The Royal Navy Sailor’s Fund, a naval charity more commonly called the “Tot Fund”, receives a donation from the sale of each bottle of British Navy Pusser’s Rum. Pusser’s is said by connoisseurs to be more like a fine brandy than a rum, with a full, rich flavour and a smoothness which are unsurpassed.

Pusser’s Rum Gunpowder Proof

Today’s Pusser’s is still produced in accordance with the Admiralty’s specifications for rum. Like the Pusser’s Rum Blue Label, which is bottled at 40% ABV, Pusser’s Rum Gunpowder Proof is a three year old Guyanese rum. It is a blend of column and pot still rums, drawing its distinctive character from rum distilled in the legendary Port Mourant double wooden pot still. This centuries-old still, built with “Greenheart” staves, infuses the spirit with rich, organic compounds absorbed over decades, creating a flavour profile unlike most other Guyanese rums.

After distillation, the rum matures for at least three years in charred oak barrels, gaining a velvety smoothness and deep, layered notes of caramel and spice. Pusser’s Rum is rich and aromatic with a full-bodied, versatile flavour and complex nose. Unlike most rums, Pusser’s Rum uses no flavouring agents and is 100% natural.

Tasting Notes

From Pusser’s Rum:

Colour: Clear, dark coppery amber with burnished copper highlights.

Nose: Pungent molasses, treacle, toffee, honey and vanilla with oak, cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger.

Body: Full-bodied with a more enhanced flavour profile than the lower proof Blue Label.

Finish: Long finish, and despite its strength, smooth and mellow.

To Serve

Pusser’s Rum Gunpowder Proof has a potent, full-bodied taste and is excellent for sipping neat or over a single large ice cube. It is also great for mixing with your favourite cola or ginger beer. It also makes a great Painkiller cocktail.

Pusser’s Painkiller Recipe

Ingredients
- 6 cl Pusser’s Gunpowder Proof Rum
- 12 cl pineapple juice
- 3 cl orange juice
- 3 cl cream of coconut
- Freshly grated nutmeg
Method:
- Shake all liquid ingredients with ice in a cocktail shaker.
- Strain into a chilled glass filled with ice.
- Top with grated nutmeg and garnish with an orange slice or cherry.
