Ceretto Barolo DOCG is a masterclass in balance, representing the “classic” style of Piedmont. While the Ceretto family is world-renowned for their single-vineyard “Cru” bottlings, this flagship Barolo is a harmonious blend of fruit from four of the region’s most prestigious communes: La Morra, Barolo, Serralunga d’Alba, and Castiglione Falletto.
Until the 2010 vintage, this wine was known as Cerreto Barolo Zonchera. The majority of the fruit came, at that time, from the Zonchetta vineyard in La Morra. It was the company’s top Barolo before they started specialising in single vineyard wines in the 1970s.
Ceretto Barolo DOCG is produced at the family’s Monsordo Bernardina Estate in Alba (the single vineyards Barolos are produced at their Bricco Rocche Winery). Acquired in the 1980s, the Monsordo Bernardina Estate is the family’s headquarters. There are more than 30 hectares of vineyards surrounding the farmstead, planted with both traditional and international varieties, all grown under strong principles of environmental sustainability.
Ceretto Casa Agricola was founded in Alba in the 1930s by Riccardo Ceretto. At that time, he operated as a negociant and did not own any vineyards. He was joined in the business by his sons, Brunello and Marcello, in the 1960s. It was their innovative thinking, for the time, that led them to map out the land that produced the best wines, and they soon began buying up vineyards. The vineyards included some of the most sought-after in Langhe and Roero, including some of the best crus of Barolo and Barbaresco.
Today, the family remain firmly entrenched in the Langhe region and, over the last 20 years, has embarked on a journey to adopt more environmentally sustainable farming methods and obtained organic certification in 2015.
Aroma: A complex and seductive bouquet of wild cherries, crushed raspberries, and dried rose petals, underpinned by sophisticated notes of liquorice, tobacco, and a hint of white truffle.
Palate: Medium-to-full-bodied and remarkably silken. It offers a racy texture where ripe red fruit meets firm, fine-grained tannins.
Finish: Long, persistent, and savoury, with lingering notes of spice and forest floor.
Ceretto Barolo is an ideal partner for rich dishes such as slow-cooked Osso Buco, wild mushroom risotto, or herb-crusted lamb. Other good matches include grilled steaks or duck confit.
It also pairs beautifully with aged Italian cheeses like Parmigiano-Reggiano or Castelmagno.
