Niepoort 2024 Vintage Port | A Balance of Freshness & Acidity

Niepoort 2024 Vintage Port is a Port with a firm, finely chiselled structure and layered depth. Concentrated yet poised, it combines tension with clarity, suggesting impressive longevity and the capacity to evolve gracefully over decades. It is one of the standout releases of the highly anticipated 2024 general declaration, the first classic, full declaration since 2017.

“It was a brilliant year,” says Nick Delaforce, winemaker at Niepoort. “Very fresh, with high natural acidity, clearly aligned with our style. It reminds me of classic years such as 1960, 1970 or 2005.”

The combination of the general 2024 declaration, Niepoort’s reputation for producing some of the Douro’s most age-worthy Ports, and the wine’s refined, classical style means that the Niepoort 2024 Vintage Port is likely to become a highly sought-after collector’s bottle. The 2024 Vintage

The 2024 growing season was one of exceptional equilibrium – cool nights and slow, even ripening preserved the natural acidity and aromatic purity that define the finest Douro harvests, producing musts of striking concentration and precision.

The vintage bears out that confidence. Firm and finely chiselled on the palate, with layered depth and an inner tension that never compromises its clarity, the 2024 is a wine that demands patience and promises a great deal in return.

Winemaking

Crafted from 80+ year-old vines, the Niepoort 2024 Vintage Port showcases the very best of the Douro’s Cima Corgo region. Fruit was meticulously selected from low-yielding old vines situated in Vinha da Pisca, Vale do Pinhão, and Ferrão. Following traditional foot-treading in lagares, the Port was matured in large wooden vats and barrels within Niepoort’s Vila Nova de Gaia cellars. This release offers a textbook example of a complex Douro field blend, prominently featuring Touriga Franca, and Tinto Cão alongside other native varieties.

Tasting Note

The 2024 vintage is already remarkably expressive, showing:

  • Intense aromas of blackberry, raspberry and leafy cassis
  • Classic Douro notes of rockrose and schist minerality
  • A fresh herbal lift of rosemary, menthol and crushed dark flowers
  • A juicy, vibrant palate with outstanding purity of fruit
  • Fine, polished tannins and a precise structure that promises decades of development

Rather than being massively concentrated, the wine is defined by its energy, freshness and balance, qualities that are hallmarks of the finest Niepoort Vintage Ports.

About Niepoort Vinhos

Founded in 1842 by Franciscus Marius Niepoort, Niepoort Vinhos has grown over six generations into one of Portugal’s most respected wine producers. Small by the standards of the Port trade, they are arguably second to none in quality.

For much of the modern era, the company was shaped by the vision of the legendary Dirk Niepoort, whose influence took Niepoort from a celebrated tawny Port house into one of the great Vintage Port producers. In 2021, the winemaking reins passed to his son Daniel van der Niepoort, while siblings Marco and Ana have also joined the family business, ensuring the sixth generation is firmly at the helm.

As James Suckling has noted: “Niepoort is to Vintage Port what Krug is to Champagne. They are both small houses in a world dominated by large competitors, but they are producing outstanding wines which very few can match.”

Tasting Notes

From Niepoort:

Crafted by knowledge, for those who are prepared to wait. Aroma: Profound and restrained from the first moment, the nose is layered rather than forceful, revealing black cherry, black plum and crystalline cassis with quiet authority. Douro rockrose anchors the profile, while subtle notes of rosemary and lavender bring lift and tension. A finely etched violet note adds poise and clarity, suggesting depth without excess and a wine built for time rather than immediate impact. Palate: Imposing in its structure and line, this is a Vintage Port of restraint, precision and absolute confidence. Concentrated and powerful at the core, yet never heavy, it is defined by freshness, clarity and tension. The unusually dry profile for a Vintage (2.9° Baumé) sharpens the wine’s architecture, allowing fine, disciplined tannins to frame the fruit rather than dominate it. Energy, not mass, drives the palate. The finish is extraordinarily long and controlled, unfolding slowly with lingering peppery spice and a saline freshness that speak unmistakably of longevity. This is not a Vintage built to impress today, but one destined to define its era over decades.

Food Pairing

  • Stilton or mature blue cheeses
  • Dark chocolate desserts
  • Walnut tart
  • Rich fruit cake
  • Fine cigars for those who enjoy the traditional Port and cigar combination
