The grapes for Domaine Jones Vineyard Collection Fitou are harvested from 15 distinct vineyards owned by Katie, scattered around the villages of Tuchan and Paziols, including Katie’s very first vineyard, St Roch.
The secret to the exceptional quality of this Fitou lies in the vine age – most of the vines are over 100 years old, bringing complexity, freshness, depth, and a beautiful texture to the wine. The grapes are sourced from small, low-yielding plots planted on a variety of distinct soil types.
Domaine Jones is owned and run by British-born winemaker Katie Jones. Katie spent nearly twenty years as the Sales and Marketing Director for the Mont Tauch co-operative in the Languedoc before falling in love with a small, 3.5-hectare vineyard in the Maury Valley in 2007, sparking her leap into independent production.
Her winemaking philosophy employs traditional, down–to-earth farming methods and innovative, small-scale techniques to capture the exact characteristics of the local terroir. Because Domaine Jones wines are only produced in very limited quantities, this truly represents the pinnacle of boutique French winemaking.
In recent years, Katie has acquired more vineyards around the village of Tuchan. Many are planted with low-yielding old vines, some up to a century old. These historic plots are often “field blended” – planted with a mix of different grape varieties co-planted in the same vineyard, which was the traditional way of planting in the early part of the last century. She is now a proud member of The Old Vine Conference.
While Katie initially made the acclaimed Domaine Jones Grenache Noir and Grenache Gris White Wine from her original vineyards, her Fitou acquisition marks a serious step into one of the Languedoc’s most famous appellations. While Fitou has historically been responsible for large volumes of mass-produced wine, independent trailblazers like Domaine Jones are proving that this rugged region can produce world-class, terroir-driven reds.
Domaine Jones Vineyard Collection Fitou is a wine of exceptional purity and personality. Exquisite Carignan aromas of smoked meat, thyme, and rich black fruit lead into a plump, fleshy palate layered with classic garrigue herbs – wild juniper, pine, and rosemary – alongside black cherry, blackberry, and notes of leather and liquorice. Gorgeous, rushing acidity and a distinctive blue tone to the fruit give way to a supple, savoury character that conjures an afternoon’s walk across the garrigue-strewn hills of Fitou.
Domaine Jones Vineyard Collection Fitou is a perfect partner for hearty Mediterranean and rustic French cuisine. Enjoy with:
The wine’s combination of dark fruit, savoury herbs and supple texture makes it particularly well suited to slow-cooked meat dishes and game.
What is Fitou?
Fitou is a red wine appellation, the first recognised red wine appellation in the Languedoc. It remains one of southern France’s most respected sources of robust, characterful red wines.
What grapes are used in Domaine Jones Fitou?
The wine is made from a traditional Languedoc blend of Carignan, Grenache and Syrah, with old-vine Carignan providing much of the wine’s structure and complexity.
Where is Fitou?
It is located between Narbonne and Perpignan. The region benefits from a Mediterranean climate, abundant sunshine and poor limestone and schist soils ideally suited to traditional grape varieties such as Carignan, Grenache and Syrah.
Is Fitou a Grape Variety?
Fitou takes its name not from a grape, but from a small coastal village poised between Narbonne and Perpignan. The appellation extends across nine villages in total – five hugging the Mediterranean lowlands and four rising into the cooler, steeper slopes of the Corbières mountains – each contributing a unique expression of this historic Languedoc wine.
Who is Katie Jones?
Katie Jones is a British-born winemaker who founded Domaine Jones in 2008. She is known for rescuing old vineyards in the Languedoc and producing highly acclaimed wines from traditional southern French grape varieties.
