The AVO Expresivo range of cigars was launched in 2026 to celebrate the centenary of the birth of the founder of AVO cigars, Avo Uvezian. The cigars are produced from Nicaraguan tobacco in Honduras, and there are three cigars in the range: a Robusto, a Toro and this, our favourite and long, slender AVO Expresivo Churchill cigar measuring 7 inches long with a 48 ring gauge – very similar in size to the Romeo Y Julieta Churchill or the Davidoff Winston Churchill Aristocrat Churchill.
The AVO Expresivo range of cigars is hand-crafted in Honduras, marking the first time an AVO blend has been produced outside the Dominican Republic.
At the heart of the Expresivo lies a sophisticated multi-terroir blend, bringing together premium leaves from Central America’s finest growing regions. The filler leaves from Jalapa, Nicaragua, contribute delicate floral notes and natural sweetness, while Condega tobacco introduces a roasted richness, subtle minerality, and outstanding balance.
This is beautifully anchored by tobaccos from the Jamastrán Valley in Honduras, delivering a grounded earthy character, refined spice, and impressive depth. A silky Ecuadorian wrapper completes the smoke, bringing a smooth creaminess and elegant finish that ties the entire profile together.
Only higher-priming tobaccos are selected for the Expresivo, chosen specifically for their exceptional richness, aromatic intensity, and structural integrity. Each individual leaf is fermented according to its unique character, allowing the natural sweetness of the Nicaraguan tobacco and the bold strength of the Honduran leaf to shine through in a remarkably harmonious smoke.
The AVO cigar range was created by Avo Uvezian, a well-known composer, musician and, above all, a cigar connoisseur. Avo Uvezian was born in 1926, the son of a family of musicians in Beirut. Eventually, he would study classical piano and composition at the famous Juilliard School of Music. In the 1950s and 1969s, and after US military service, he pursued a career as a jazz musician.
In the early 1980s, Uvezian opened a restaurant and piano bar in Puerto Rico, and it was here that he discovered his love for cigars. He soon produced his own cigar brand to give away to guests. Eventually, he met Davidoff’s master cigar blender, Hendrik “Henke” Kelner, in the Dominican Republic, and by 1988, the first AVO cigars were being sold in New York. AVO cigars were bought by the luxury cigar producer Davidoff in 1995.

The AVO Expresivo Churchill vitola allows the tobacco blend to evolve slowly and deliberately.
This is a rich, layered smoke that begins with prominent earthy notes, dark chocolate, and roasted nuts.
As the burn progresses, smoother transitions of creamy leather, cedar, and wood emerge, balanced by the signature midpoint creaminess expected from AVO Cigars.
Towards the back end, a refined spice builds alongside subtle floral nuances and a hint of dried fruit.
The bold profile of the AVO Expresivo Churchill pairs brilliantly with aged spirits or a fortified wine.
Try it with a well-aged rum like the Goslings Family Reserve Old Rum; the sweet, caramel, and gentle spice mirror the cigar’s Jalapa tobacco and hold their own against the Honduran binder.
A complex, well-rounded Scotch whisky brings out the creamy Ecuadorian wrapper and spicy finish. Try with the Mossburn Speyside Blended Malt.
Lastly, a vintage or fine tawny port would complement the darker chocolate, nutty, and leather notes that emerge in the second half of the Churchill, try with Dow’s 20 Year Old Tawny.
