Description

CVNE Imperial Reserva Rioja presented in 37.5cl half-bottles. In 2013, Wine Spectator, the influential American magazine, awarded CVNE Imperial Reserva Rioja the coveted title of the world’s best wine, the first Spanish wine to win this title and a landmark moment for Spanish winemaking.

CVNE Imperial Rioja, A Highly Esteemed Rioja Brand

CVNE Imperial Reserva Rioja is one of the biggest and most highly regarded Rioja brands. It is a true classic in Rioja and was first produced in the 1920s. Its name comes after a special bottling for the English market, in a measure called ‘Pinta Imperial’ or ‘Imperial Pint’ (an Imperial pint, approximately half a litre ). From 1928, these wines could be found at the top restaurants and shops all over Spain. It has always been characterised by its very high and constant quality, in every vintage.

Compania Vinicola del Norte de Espana

CVNE (which is also known as the Compañía Vinicola del Norte de España or CUNE) was founded in 1879 in the town of Haro in Rioja by two brothers. It is still controlled by the direct descendants of the founding family. Today, CVNE’s portfolio encompasses eight wineries strategically located across Spain’s key wine regions, including CVNE, Imperial, Vina Real, and Vinedos del Contino in Rioja, Roger Goulart in Penedés, Bela in Ribera del Duero, Virgen del Galir in Valdeorras, and La Val in Rías Baixas.

CVNE Imperial Winemaking

  • The Imperial range includes a ‘Reserva’ and a ‘Gran Reserva’ and is only produced in exceptional vintages.
  • For the CVNE Imperial Reserva, a selection of the best grapes from CVNE’s Rioja Alta vineyards around the village of Villalba was hand-harvested.
  • The fermentation takes place in a combination of oak vats and stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures.
  • The wine is then aged in both American and French new oak casks for two years.
  • This is followed by another two years in the bottle before its release to the market.
  • The blend is usually Tempranillo 85%, Graciano 10% and Mazuelo 5%.

Why Buy Half Bottles of Rioja?

A half bottle of Rioja offers perfect portion control for solo enjoyment or light drinking, making it ideal for midweek indulgence or exploring new wine pairings without committing to a full bottle. Its smaller size is also convenient for storage, picnics, and cooking.

Tasting Notes

CVNE Imperial Reserva Rioja has a intense body of cherry colour with beautiful purple highlights. Attractive aroma of forest fruits, violets and liquorice with hints of Atlantic forest, clove and cigar leaves.

Food Pairing

Pair CVNE Imperial Reserve with roasted pork tenderloin or grilled lamb with garlic and thyme to highlight its savoury notes, or a classic Spanish paella with chorizo and saffron to echo its earthy warmth.

For lighter fare, try manchego cheese or jamón ibérico to complement its smooth tannins, while a mushroom risotto brings out its subtle richness
