Chateau Cantemerle is located on the Haut Medoc wine growing appellation of Bordeaux in the commune of Macau. It is classifed as a Fifth Growth under the Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855 and was the last Chateau to be added, although some controversy stands around whether it was officially included in 1855. It has been included on all lists since 1856. The estate was sold, in near ruin, to the Dubos family to le Groupe SMABTP (Les Mutuelles d’Assurance du Bâtiment et des Travaux Public) in 1981 and was extensively and almost completely rebuilt. The vineyards consist of 190 hectares planted with 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot, with an additional 5% of Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot with an average vine age of 30 years old. Chateau Cantemerle 2006 is a blend of 44% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc and 7% Petit Verdot.
