Description

Champagne Forget Brimont Blanc de Noirs Extra Brut 1er Cru NV is a Champagne made only from red grapes, in this case, 100% Pinot Noir from Premier Cru rated villages. Available to buy online and in-store at Fareham Wine Cellar.

A Family-Owned Champagne House

Champagne Forget-Brimont is a small Champagne producer located in Craon de Ludes. 6th Generation Champenoise Michel Forget is the co-owner and winemaker. The estate can trace its origins back to the early 19th century when Michel’s ancestor, Louis, first planted vineyards in the area. The Champagne Forget-Brimont brand was officially established in 1920 by another relative, Eugène. In 2000, Michel partnered with Frédéric Jorez to ensure Forget-Brimont’s continuation as an independent Champagne House.

A Négociant Manipulant Producer

The company owns 19 hectares of vineyards in the Montagne de Reims with Grand Cru vineyards at Mailly-Champagne, Verzenay and Verzy, and Premier Cru vineyards at Chigny-Les-Roses, Ludes, Montbré, Sermiers, Taissy and Villers-Allerand. Pinot Noir is their most planted grape variety. Although Champagne Forget-Brimont owns vineyards, it also buys grapes from other local growers. They are therefore classified as a Négociant Manipulant (NM) producer.

Optimal Cellaring Conditions

Champagne Forget-Brimont’s Cellars are dug out of the chalky soils (that Champagne is famous for) to a depth of 15 metres. This means that the cellars are at a constant temperature of 10.5 C in both summer and winter, the optimum ageing conditions for Champagne, creating fine bubbles and incomparable perlage.

  • Non-vintage Champagnes are a blend of three different vintages of wine (allowing them to maintain a house style) and are aged a minimum of two years before release.
  • Vintage Champagnes are aged between three and ten years before release. This ensures that the Champagnes arrive at perfect maturity for immediate drinking, although they can also be cellared for longer if required.

Champagne Forget Brimont Blanc de Noirs Extra Brut 1er Cru Winemaking

  • Vineyards: 100% Pinot Noir from 1er Cru and Grand Cru vineyards in Montagne de Reims, renowned for superior Pinot Noir production.

    • Premier Cru: Ludes, Chigny-les-Roses, Montbré and Taissy

    • Grand Cru: Mailly-Champagne, Verzenay and Verzy

  • Harvesting and Pressing: Grapes are harvested by hand, and whole-bunch pressing is employed. Only the “cuvée”, juice from the first pressing is used.
  • Fermentation: Alcoholic fermentation at 17°C followed by malolactic fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks.

  • Ageing: The wine is aged in traditional chalk cellars for a minimum of 5 years with a resting period of several months post disgorgement before shipping.

  • Reserve Wines: 30 to 40% of reserve wines blended in to ensure roundness, complexity and consistency.

  • Dosage: Dosage level of 5 g/L.

Tasting Notes

From Champagne Forget-Brimont:

Appearance: Golden colour delicately tinted with copper reflections.

Nose: Rich and complex, the nose develops aromas of dried fruits with toasted and pastry notes.

Taste: The ripeness of the fruit is combined with its crunchiness. Flavours of apricot and orange zest evolving into stewed notes. Subtle combination of structure, length and liveliness.

Food Pairing

Try with richer poultry dishes, wild duck or game, dishes with truffles and venison.

What Is Extra Brut Champagne?

Extra Brut Champagne is a dry style of Champagne.

Technically, it refers to a Champagne with a dosage (added sugar syrup) of 0–6 grams of sugar per litre (g/L). This makes it one of the driest styles, thereby emphasising the wine’s natural acidity, minerality, and fruit purity.

It is normally drier than a Brut Champagne and not quite as dry as a Brut Nature (Brut Zero) but, because these categories have a sliding scale, they can overlap:

  • Brut Nature (0–3 g/L): Even drier, with minimal or no added sugar.
  • Brut (0–12 g/L): Slightly sweeter, most common style.
  • Extra Brut (0–6 g/L) sits between these, offering a crisp, dry profile.
