Borgo dei Trulli Duna Mirante Primitivo di Manduria DOCG is a powerful, full-bodied expression of the sun-drenched vineyards of Puglia. Sourced from ancient vines planted just 400 metres from the sparkling Ionian Sea, this authentic Primitivo captures the wild beauty and maritime influence of its coastal terroir.
Made without added sulphites and using only carefully selected yeasts, it delivers a pure, genuine expression of southern Italy: rich, intense, and unmistakably true to its roots. With only 5,292 bottles produced, this is a rare and limited-edition Primitivo.
Borgo dei Trulli Duna Mirante Primitivo di Manduria DOCG is made from grapes sourced from the coastal dunes of the area “Monaco Mirante” near the town of Campomarino (commune of Maruggio) – in the Italian southern region of Puglia.
Trulli’s vineyards lie a mere 400 meters from the Ionian Sea and are protected from the sea and salt by the large sand dunes. These dunes are also a protected natural reserve, where typical Mediterranean herbs (rosemary, thyme and oregano, amongst others) grow wild. It is a very unusual wine-growing area.
The vines are trained using the ancient “alberello” training technique. The average age of the vines is around 60-70 years old. Production per plant is approximately 1 kg of grapes per plant; thus, the production of this wine is very limited.
Masseria Borgo dei Trulli, to give its full name, is a new wine venture made by Orion Wines, a company created to bring together interesting wines from small growers and wineries from all over Italy. The company was created by Luca Pomaro and winemaker Alessandro Michelon with the premise of producing wines from indigenous grapes that express the typicity of the particular region where they are grown.
The Masseria Borgo dei Trulli estate is located in the heart of Salento and is owned and managed by Orion wines with Alessandro Michelon as head winemaker. Around 80% of the wine produced at the estate is red wine produced from Negroamaro and Primitivo, with some white wine, including Vermentino, Fiano and Sauvignon Blanc.
Masseria Borgo dei Trulli is named after the traditional Apulian dry stone huts with a conical roof. These are known as a “trullo” or “trulli” in the plural and feature in the brand logo.
Borgo dei Trulli Duna Mirante Primitivo di Manduria DOCG is ink-red in colour with violet reflections, the nose reveals intense balsamic notes of eucalyptus, thyme, and wild Mediterranean herbs, layered with dark red fruits, plums, and a distinctive salty, maritime character reminiscent of the nearby sea.
On the palate, it is very concentrated and enveloping, with flavours of ripe dark fruit, plums, and subtle herbal undertones. Powerful yet elegant, firm and austere with velvety tannins and a long, persistent finish. At 16% ABV, it delivers impressive structure and depth while remaining balanced and refined.
This bold Puglian Primitivo pairs beautifully with rich, savoury dishes. It excels with grilled or stewed red meats, hearty meat ragùs, roasted lamb, game, spicy salumi and mature cheeses, especially aged Pecorino.
It also works well as a meditative wine on its own.
Serve at 16–18°C and decant for 30–60 minutes to allow it to open fully.
