Zonnebloem Chardonnay | South African Chardonnay from Stellenbosch

Zonnebloem Chardonnay is a 100% Chardonnay from one of South Africa’s most historic wine estates — a beautifully balanced Stellenbosch white that combines the richness of barrel fermentation with the precision and freshness of cool-fermented stainless steel. Sourced from low-yielding vineyards across four of Stellenbosch’s most distinguished sub-regions — Jonkershoek, Stellenbosch Kloof, Koelenhof, and Helderberg — this is South African Chardonnay at an accessible price point that consistently over-delivers for the style. Buy Zonnebloem Chardonnay at Fareham Wine Cellar and discover one of Stellenbosch’s most reliable and food-friendly whites.

Zonnebloem Chardonnay Winemaking

  • 100% Chardonnay sourced from low-yielding, trellised vineyards in Jonkershoek, Stellenbosch Kloof, Koelenhof, and Helderberg
  • Each vineyard parcel vinified separately to preserve individual terroir character
  • 80% of the juice fermented in barrel at 14–16°C for richness, texture, and complexity
  • 20% fermented in stainless steel tanks at 14–16°C to preserve freshness and aromatic precision
  • Both components aged on the lees for seven months before blending

About Zonnebloem — South Africa’s Most Historic Wine Estate

Zonnebloem is one of the oldest and most storied names in South African wine. The farm that would later bear the Zonnebloem name was established in Simondium, Paarl, as far back as 1692 — making it one of the Cape’s earliest wine estates. In 1856, owner Petrus Malherbe divided the farm between his two sons; William Malherbe named his portion “Zonnebloem” — the Afrikaans word for sunflower — a name that has endured for nearly 170 years.

The estate passed through several owners before the Furter family purchased it in 1940. Under Marie Furter, Zonnebloem made wine history — she became South Africa’s first female winemaker, a pioneering achievement in an era when women in the cellar were virtually unheard of. In 1963 the estate was acquired by Distell, one of South Africa’s largest drinks producers. It has since been acquired by Heineken.

Stellenbosch — South Africa’s Premier Chardonnay Region

Stellenbosch is South Africa’s most celebrated fine wine region and the source of some of the Cape’s finest Chardonnay. Located 50 kilometres east of Cape Town, the region benefits from a temperate Mediterranean climate moderated by the cooling influence of False Bay — warm enough to achieve full physiological ripeness, cool enough to preserve the natural acidity and freshness that distinguish the finest South African whites from their counterparts in warmer climates.

The four sub-regions from which Zonnebloem sources its Chardonnay each bring distinct characteristics to the blend. Jonkershoek and Stellenbosch Kloof, in the mountains above the town, provide cooler growing conditions and greater mineral precision; Helderberg, closer to False Bay, adds maritime freshness and citrus character; Koelenhof contributes body and stone fruit richness from its deeper, more fertile soils. Together they produce a Chardonnay of genuine complexity and balance — one that compares favourably with South African Chardonnays at twice the price.

Tasting Notes

Zonnebloem Chardonnay Tasting Notes

Pale gold in the glass with a bright, vivacious hue. The nose is inviting and complex — ripe peach, apricot, and citrus lead, supported by a gentle vanilla and toasted almond note from the barrel fermentation. On the palate the wine is well-structured and creamy, with stone fruit flavour, a rounded texture from seven months on the lees, and a clean, focused acidity that keeps the finish fresh and persistent. A South African Chardonnay that offers genuine Burgundian character at a fraction of the price.

Food Pairing

Excellent served lightly chilled on its own, or with fresh salads, seafood, fish or chicken dishes prepared with cream-based sauces.

FAQs

Zonnebloem Chardonnay — Frequently Asked Questions

What does Zonnebloem Chardonnay taste like?
Zonnebloem Chardonnay is a rounded, creamy South African Chardonnay with ripe peach, apricot, and citrus on the nose, a vanilla and almond note from barrel fermentation, and a fresh, persistent finish. The seven months of lees ageing adds a creamy texture and complexity that gives the wine genuine presence on the palate without feeling heavy.

Is Zonnebloem Chardonnay oaked?
Partially — 80% of the wine is fermented in barrel, which contributes richness, texture, and the vanilla and toasted almond character associated with oaked Chardonnay. The remaining 20% is fermented in stainless steel, preserving freshness and aromatic precision. The result is a well-balanced wine that has the complexity of an oaked Chardonnay without being dominated by wood.

What food pairs with Zonnebloem Chardonnay?
The wine’s creamy texture and stone fruit character make it an excellent match for grilled chicken, pasta with cream or mushroom sauce, roast pork, grilled sea bass, and mature soft cheeses. Serve at 10–12°C for the best drinking experience.

How does Zonnebloem Chardonnay compare to other South African Chardonnays?
Zonnebloem Chardonnay sits at the accessible end of the South African Chardonnay market and consistently over-delivers for its price. For a step up in complexity and single-estate pedigree, the Meerlust Chardonnay from Stellenbosch offers Burgundian precision and depth at a mid-premium price point. Both are available at Fareham Wine Cellar.
