Vegueros Centrogordos Cigars are the most recent addition to the Vegueros range of cigars. This is a short robusto, the Vitola de Galera is Centro Gordo, and they measure 3 7/8 inches with a 54 ring gauge. This joins the other cigars in the range, the Mananitas, the Entretiempos and Centrofinos. The Centrogordos were first launched in 2023.
The Vegueros cigar brand is named after the Vegueros (the farmers or tobacco growers) of the Vuelta Abajo zone. Traditionally in the Pinar del Rio province, the Vegueros would also make their own cigars to give away to visitors. The brand is a tribute to the generations of tobacco farmers in this region.
The cigars are made at the “Fábrica de Tabacos Francisco Donatien” factory in a sturdy building located in the centre of the city that was built as a prison in 1868 and converted into a cigar factory in 1961. The brand was discontinued in 2012 and then relaunched with new packaging in 2013. These are a great Cuban cigar from a little-known and undervalued brand. The tobacco is all sourced from the premium Vuelta Abajo region and they are medium-strength cigars.
The names of each vitola are inspired by terms used by the Cuban tobacco farmers. Centrogordo, for example, is the classification for a particular stage of harvesting. The harvesting of a single tobacco plant takes around 30 days, starting at the bottom and slowly working up leaving days in between each picking. This method of harvesting accentuates the natural difference between the older, less flavoursome leaves at the bottom and the younger, more potent leaves at the top. It also allows the top leaves to reach full maturation. Centrogordo is the stage of harvest just before the farmer reaches the corona (the very top) of the plant.
Vegueros Centrogordos are a short, stubby, on-trend cigar, with a slightly flattened head. Perfect if time is short but you are looking for a cigar with a chunky ring gauge.
The Vegueros Centrogordos offers a smooth and even burn. The draw is effortless, producing toasty, woody smoke with nutty undertones of almond. A sweet marzipan finish lingers on the palate, leaving a pleasant aftertaste. The overall profile is medium-bodied, with a balance of creamy tobacco, earth, and subtle spice.
Around 25 minutes.
