Cigar Profile:
The Plasencia Alma Fuerte Nestor IV Toro is a large, box-pressed cigar. These are premium Nicaraguan cigars are made from 100% Nicaraguan tobacco: wrapper, filler and binder. They are hand-rolled at the famous Plasencia Cigars Factory located to the north of Managua. Alma Fuerte translates literally as “strong soul” and is the company’s flagship range of cigars.
Plasencia Cigars was founded by Don Eduardo Plasencia. Don Eduardo emigrated from the Canary Islands in 1865 to Cuba and began to grow tobacco. The farm remained in the Plasencia family until it was confiscated by Fidel Castro’s regime in 1963.
Don Elder Sixto and his family fled to Mexico, landing in Nicaragua in 1965, where he planted some of his best tobacco seeds. During more political unrest, the farms were burned by the Sandinistas in 1978, and the family fled to Honduras. Nestor Plasencia Sr. joined the industry in 1987, and by 1990, the family had re-established operations in Nicaragua.
Plasencia Cigars is now the largest tobacco grower in the world and produces cigars for over 30 very well-known, premium cigar brands, including Rocky Patel and Alec Bradley.
The company launched the first cigars under the Plasencia brand in 2017. What sets Plasencia apart is their “seed-to-smoke” philosophy: they control every aspect of production, from planting and harvesting to ageing, blending, and hand-rolling.
The Plasencia Alma Fuerte Nestor IV Toro opens with a bold rush of black pepper, red spice, and earthy cocoa-cedar notes.
In the second third, the profile evolves into a complex, layered experience. Sweet plum, black cherry, and apricot blend seamlessly with roasted cashew, dark coffee, and cinnamon-spiced chocolate, all supported by hints of leather and oak.
The final third introduces peppery nuances with mineral intensity. Molasses, espresso, and creamy nuttiness come together for a refined, toasted finish with no trace of bitterness. A memorable echo of plum and apricot lingers on the palate.
This impeccably balanced cigar delivers complex elegance in every puff.
This cigar will pair well with an aged Bourbon. Bob Dylan’s Heaven’s Door Tennessee Bourbon would be a good whisky to try; its caramel and vanilla notes would beautifully complement the cigar’s plum, dark chocolate, and molasses flavours.
Otherwise, a vintage Port or Late Bottled Vintage Port would be a good match; the sweetness would temper the pepper spice while working well with the dark fruit and oak finish. Or try with a rich espresso coffee.
