Description

Esporão Azeites do Norte Alentejano DOP Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO) is a premium Portuguese EVOO from the protected northern Alentejo region. It is produced from sustainably farmed and organically produced Galega, Blanqueta, and Cobrançosa varieties. This is a medium to light, velvety EVOO with subtle hints of almonds and a delicate finish, perfect for drizzling, dipping, or adding to a gourmet hamper.

Esporão Olive Oil – Estate, Heritage & Sustainability

Although Esporão was founded in 1977, it was not until 20 years later, in 1997, that they set themselves the challenge of producing the finest Portuguese extra virgin olive oils. The estate selects only the finest native olive varieties from the estate’s own olive groves in Reguengos de Monsaraz (and sometimes from local growers). The estate covers some 1849 hectares with 441 hectares of vines and 93 hectares of olive groves.

Production of Esporão Azeites do Norte Alentejano DOP EVOO

  • Olives are received shortly after harvest at the Esporão estate mill, separated by variety, and immediately cold-extracted at temperatures no higher than 24ºC (75ºF)
  • Olives are cold-pressed on the estate using a heat exchanger system that shortens extraction time and preserves aromas
  • The paste is centrifuged, with pomace mechanically separated; the oil is immediately filtered and packaged
  • Produced using only sustainable processes that respect both nature and people
  • Sustainable methods help preserve maximum nutrients, aromas, and flavours
  • Esporão Azeites do Norte Alentejano DOP Extra Virgin Olive Oil is a blend of Galega, Blanqueta, and Cobrançosa olive varieties
  • Organically Certified by Agricert
  • Intensity: 2/5 (medium-light)

The Alentejo Region – Ideal for Olive Growing

The estate is located in the Alentejo DOC in the Reguengos de Monsaraz sub-region some 170 km from Lisbon. The Alentejo is characterised by hot and dry summers, mild springs and autumns and cold, dry winters. The combination of sunshine and minimal rainfall produces ideal conditions for grape growing, but the region is also known for its many olive groves and cork oak forests.

Today the company has expanded to produce wines outside of Alentejo in the Douro (Murcas) and Vinho Verde (Quinta do Ameal) regions. They are one of the largest organic wine producers in the world.
