Description

Janneau VSOP Armagnac Year Of The Tiger is a limited edition bottling of Janneau VSOP Armagnac, released to celebrate the Chinese New Year 2022, the Year of the Tiger. This premium French brandy is a blend of Armagnacs from Bas-Armagnac and Armagnac-Ténarèze and is made principally from the Ugni Blanc grape variety.

Armagnac Janneau, Since 1851

Armagnac Janneau is one of the top Armagnac houses. It is one of the oldest of the great houses. It is also the world’s leading brand of Armagnac, available in 80 countries worldwide. Pierre Etienne Janneau founded the company in 1851. The company is located in the heart of the Armagnac region in the town of Condom.

Janneau Armagnac has undergone several ownership changes since then. Cognac Martell bought it in 1974. Seagram eventually bought out Martell. Then the Giovinetti family acquired it in 1993. They wanted to return the business to a family-run concern. The company was last sold in 2014 to the French spirits specialist, The Spirit France Group.

Uniquely, Janneau is the only major house that distils, blends, and ages its own stocks under its own roof. Having access to their own distillery gives Janneau complete control over the quality. It also gives them control over the personality of their Armagnac.

Janneau’s Distillation Mastery

Janneau is renowned for its expertise in both distillation methods permitted by the appellation. The first method is continuous distillation using an Armagnac alembic still. The second is double distillation with Charentaise pot stills. Only the heart of the distillate is selected. This is the finest portion after discarding the heads and tails. This results in a brandy with exceptional finesse and concentrated, fruity flavours.

Oak Barrel Ageing

After distillation, Janneau’s Armagnac is aged in French Limousine oak barrels. The spirit absorbs vanillins and tannins from the toasted oak. This imparts colour and rich flavours. As it matures, the spirit transforms from a colourless liquid into a darker hue. The colour ranges from pale straw to deep amber. During this time, it develops a smoother, more elegant palate. The complex notes include prunes, violets, figs, honey, butterscotch, and rancio.

Key Product Details

  • Age: Minimum 4 years (some components aged up to 20 years)
  • Region: Bas-Armagnac and Armagnac-Ténarèze
  • Primary Grape: Ugni Blanc
  • Edition: Limited release celebrating the Year of the Tiger
  • Producer: Janneau (Est. 1851)

As a VSOP Armagnac, the youngest component in the blend must be at least 4 years old. However, as with most of their brandy bottlings, this contains some much older spirits. These far exceed the minimum ageing requirement. Some of the eaux de vie in this blend are aged for up to 20 years in French oak casks.

The Janneau VSOP Armagnac Year Of The Tiger limited edition bottling follows previous bottlings: these celebrated the years of the Pig, Rat, and Ox. The series first launched in 2019. Each bottle is a special edition and features unique artwork.

Tasting Notes

Bright amber in colour with golden tints. On the nose it displays aromas of peach, light spices, coffee on tobacco. On the palate it has rich flavours of prunes and dried apricots with a long finish displaying hints of spices.

To Serve

Enjoy it neat, over ice, or in cocktails; it pairs beautifully with blue cheeses like Roquefort, strong cheddars, or dark chocolate desserts.
