Description

Giuaani Chacha is a transparent, colourless spirit, a distillate made from grape pomace in Georgia. Chacha is a by-product of the wine-making process. Most wine-making regions produce a similar spirit, like Grappa in Italy or Marc in France, from the leftover stems and skins after vinification.

The Giuaani winery is located in the village of Manavi in the heart of the Kakheti wine-growing region of eastern Georgia. The Giuashvili family has been involved in producing wine in the region as far back as the 1800s with the first properly organised wine production beginning in 1894. The family’s modern wine company was founded in 2010 with a brand new winery, equipped with modern equipment and traditional Qvevri, being completed in 2014. The winery now also has a visitors centre and boutique hotel. Since 2022 the Giuaani winery has been run by the youngest member of the family, Maria Giuashvili. Winemaker is Giorgi Jmukhadze.

The winery focuses on the production of indigenous grape varieties including Saperavi, Rkatsiteli, Mtsvane, Kisi and Khikhvi with the more international Cabernet Sauvignon. Red, white and rosé wines are produced both in the modern and traditional style. They also produce this Chacha and a Georgian Brandy.

Chacha is a staple at Georgian feasts and celebrations, symbolizing hospitality and community. It is commonly served during toasts, known as “supra,” where sharing drinks is a key part of the tradition.

Giuaani Chacha is made from the Rkatsiteli and Mtsvane grapes. As mentioned above, it is made from the left-overs from the wine-making process. The pomace is fermented and then double distilled, resulting in a high-alcohol content spirit. However; Guiaani also add some wine to the distillation which helps to produce a smoother, less harsh spirit. This is a high-quality, pure and clean style.

Tasting Notes

Guiaani Chacha has a good, clear, transparent colour. The nose is fragrant and aromatic with floral notes and hints of fresh bread. The palate is well-balanced and smooth with a long finish.

To Serve

Chacha is a staple at Georgian feasts and celebrations, symbolizing hospitality and community. It is commonly served in small shot glasses during toasts which are known as “supra,” where sharing drinks is a key part of the tradition. 

It can also be served neat as an aperitif and can be paired with Georgian dishes like Khinkali dumplings, Khachapuri bread or meat skewers.
