Description

Chateau de Beaulon Cognac XO Premier is a single estate Cognac. The rules for XO Cognac were changed in April 2018 so that the youngest brandy in the blend must have a minimum age of 10 years old. Beaulon pride themselves on ageing their cognac well beyond the legal minimum for each level.

Château de Beaulon was built in 1480 and is one of the oldest and most authentic properties (Gothic / Renaissance) to be found in the Saintonge region of Cognac. It has passed through the hands of many owners through the years from the original Vinsons family, the de Beaulon family, the Bishops of Bordeaux and various others until Christian Thomas acquired the Chateau in 1965. He was instrumental in getting the estate listed as a French historical monument in 1987.  As well as fine Cognacs, they are also producers of some excellent red and white Pineau des Charentes. Today the Chateau has 94 hectares of vineyards planted with nine grape varieties: Folle Blanche, Colombard and Montils for Cognac and Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot for the Pineaus.

Chateau de Beaulon Cognac XO Premier is made from a blend of traditional Cognac grape varieties: Colombard, Folle Blanche and Montils. After the wine is produced it is then double distilled on light lees in one of four small, handmade copper pot stills. The small volume of the stills captures the aromas and concentrates the floral and fruity characteristics of the wine. After this there is a long ageing in small Limousin or Tronçais oak barrels in one of the five thick stone-walled cellars. The youngest brandy in the XO Premier is 12 years old.
