Corner Fifty Three describe their Umami gin as the “Child of Funk”. The botanicals in Corner Fifty Three Umami Gin are Shiitake Mushrooms, Sun Dried Tomatoes, Honeyed Butternut Squash, Rosemary and Pink Peppercorn. I think this will be a really interesting gin to try and work out various food matches for, it can stand up to spices and meaty flavours. Failing that it is perfect in a Red Snapper cocktail (A Bloody Mary made with gin instead of vodka) or in a gin and tonic with a Mediterranean style tonic water garnished with a sprig of rosemary.

Corner Fifty Three Umami Gin has a really unusual, yet very attractive aroma. It makes you want to keep coming back to nose it. This is most definitely savoury on the nose. There are aromas of mushroom, hints of tomato, a truffle-y note and a good hit of rosemary. One of my customers described the nose as “spag bol”, don’t let this put you off, I can see what he meant and he did buy a bottle. There is a bit of spicy, peppery character and faint hit of juniper. It is big and round in the mouth and surprisingly not as savoury as the nose might suggest. The sun-dried tomato character really shines through. Big, round and spicy. This is a gin that would be really interesting do some food matching with, it worked really well with some barbecued black pudding!
